How long to wait after rain?
« on: November 04, 2011, 09:12:13 AM »
This is a question I have talked about several times over the years.  How long should you wait after rain at the Pinns?

No doubt the rock is more susceptible to breakage soon after a soaking, but how many days is the appropriate number to wait?

It rained last night in San Jose and at the Pinns, it is likely going to rain a little today, maybe not much, but tomorrow is clear.  Too soon? Get on it?  Stay on the main things?  Don't even look at it because it might break?

Thoughts?

I'll get shit for this, but just go. Tell everyone else to stay off till it dries. ;)

Seriously, pull carefully for your own sake.

If it breaks, it was going to anyways.

Or, just start a new line, it was definitely going to come off then anyways, right?

volcanic is not sandstone. But it's good to stay off the tiny crimp lines or any known weak holds. Gorillas in the Moss and others on that side of mono being good examples that I can think of.

anyone else have strong thoughts?

My forecast for the Pinnacles predicts a low of 30 tonight, should we be worried about that water freezing?

A freeze-thraw at the Pinns would be hell on all the fixed copperheads out there.

Interesting question and one that I've not pondered before. I've climbed after (and during) rain at the Pinns. I not sure I've seen anything snap but in a few cases I see some fairly obvious flex :o
