Europeans will be booking vacations to the Pinnacles.

Soledad will be come a B&B town. And Hollister will still be Hollister.

That is the future.

Plenty of Euros already.
Soledad will be billed as the Gateway to the Pinnacles.

Just back from the ceremony and the reception. Given how I received my invitation to the ceremony, I was under the impression that it was private. I don't know how the other attendees were notified, but I got an E-mail from the Monument(at the time) staff and was asked to RSVP by a specified date. That seems like a pretty private invite to me.

It really might have been a private ceremony, but there were almost 500 attendees so maybe it wasn't private. I just don't know. I apologize if any comments I made in this or other forums gave the impression that it was private. BTW, most of the non-government attendees were from the neighboring area (ranchers and residents of the local towns).

I did get in some rebolting before the ceremony.

Bruce, no sweat. I suspect it wasn't private private, but limited distribution. The numbers seem to reflect that.

The fact that one of the number one recreational user groups of the monument wasn't invited, as a group, seems like a slight to me. Not one of intention, but omission. But perhaps forgetting about us climbers isn't a terrible thing in every case.  :)

Hey all -

Damn, wish I had checked this thread earlier in the week, but I was slammed with work leading up to the dedication event. (Sam Farr's office gave park staff about a week of notice to try to put the event together.) Somehow I assumed the dedication event would be posted on the Pinnacles or FOP websites for folks, but I definitely wasn't the one responsible for sending out RSVPs or basic information announcing the event.

The dedication event was not a private affair; anyone from the public could have shown up, and a lot of visitors did. With walk-in folks and people responding to RSVPs, we had around 600 people gathered near the Pinnacles Campground store / VC. I think it was held on Monday, and not widely advertised, because park staff only have so much logistical capacity to handle that many people at an event, especially in regards to parking. Additionally, Ken Salazar (the departing Interior secretary) was there along with Sam Farr and a number of other big whigs, so the lack of advertising may have had to do with perceived security concerns.

I would have posted but I to thought it is was invite only.  I took the day off with the plan to attend but spent the day doing mudding of another sort.  I mostly finished mudding the living room wall.  One more coat. then paint and done.  Getting close.

Gavin I will be making you a moderator on the closure thread.  I can make you a moderator on the forum in general so you can notifications.  If you do not want this just scream and I will ignore you.  :)

I was there and my friend Ed Haskell took lots of photos.  I'll put up a link when he posts them.  Nothing to do with climbing was mentioned by any of the speakers in more than an hour and twenty minutes of talk.  The Park Service people were soundly praised for their work over the years and I concur with those sentiments.  Much was made of all the hard work politicians of all stripes completed to make the upgrade.  Much also was promised in terms of great things happening to both Pinnacles and all surrounding communities.  We'll see.  Sam Farr and I are acquainted, but I did not speak with him on Monday.  Both he and Mr. Salazar were eloquent in their praise of Pinnacles beauty and the need to protect it for future generations.  I'm older than most of you, so you'll have to keep track of that.  I concur with Gavin on several points.  There were about six hundred folks there and many were in various branches of federal, state and local service.  I think, too, that no disrespect was intended to climbers or anybody else by the strange and spotty notification issued for this event.  It was just highly disorganized.  It was a wonderful afternoon, by the by, sunny and mild, and some free food was offered.  I'm not sure who forked over for the goodies.  The kids invited to lead the pledge of allegiance and sing hit the cupcakes hard.  I took a piece of quite good chocolate cake home to Phyllis.  Charles Ewing, my friend and retired Pinnacles ranger, and I took a short hike up below Discovery Wall before the sun departed entirely.  The speeches were supposed to end at 4:15.  They went past five.  No beer at the res.  We drank in the parking lot instead.

P.S.  I spotted at least two secret service types - you know, the guys with wires in their ears.

Don't ruin the fun we were having with Mungie.

It was private...aka No Mungie.

I think it was a BLL thing as it would have degraded the event.

I do believe the truth is, they can't handle huge crowds...

Gavin, thanks for the update. I'm somewhat mollified - the idea of a private event to celebrate a public resource, well, let's just say I was relieved by your and Bob's more accurate explanation (oh, and Bob, great post!).
