He's on a route called Depends on the Senior Wall at The Far Side.

And Cruxluv, I'm not sure how true it is that you're not climbing much, but climbing or not, please continue to contribute to this site (you did, after all, make the single funniest post ever made here, and are almost always a great, not just good, contributor).

I checked and double checked that sentence. How does it appear off and I'll look it over again.

Don't commas go before an "and"
I think having commas before and after "especially" is weird since that word isn't a type of rock and doesn't belong in that list.

But take my advice with a grain of salt. I don't know english, Ive proven this numerous times.

I honestly did not pay any attention to it and knew that you were trying to emphasize granite.
Well if we want to be really picky it is technically granodiorite - as is the majority of the sierra batholith (nerd alert!).

My understanding is that when writing a list you should say what, who, where, when, this, that and the other. The last word in the list before the "and" doesn't get a comma. I think what you meant to say is The area features a variety of rock types including basalt columns, mixed volcanics and most notably granite.

Isn't the second to last sentence unnecessarily using a comma splice in the second half of the semi colon?

Alternate version without the comma splice and using short sentences instead of the semi colon.

The SPH is a year round climbing destination. It has crags at low elevation to the west and others up high to the east, near the pass itself.

What John wrote is the meaning we intended, although the way you wrote it is bulkier.

I've got two English majors double checking it now, although I am pretty darn sure it is correct as written. Here's why: First, unless "especially granite" itself is a unique type of rock, there must be a comma between the words "especially" and "granite."

Second, commas usually denote pauses in speech. Read the sentence out loud, pausing briefly at each comma, and you arrive at exactly the meaning John described above.

Third, commas between distinct subjects are mandatory (such as here) the comma between "basalt columns" and "mixed volcanic rock." However, if different subjects are separated by the word "and," that same comma becomes optional. We omitted the optional comma between "columns" and "and" because the comma after the word "and" seemed necessary (and three commas would have been too much).

A lot of thought went into this exact sequence, but that doesn't mean it is necessarily correct or even best. I'll comment again when my experts say more.

As a side note: Adam, you're not allowed to buy a copy unless you pledge that you will actually use the damn thing!

You better not be. There's only so many good 5.6s around.  ;)  You can bolt the 11s and 12s and...  that is, if Tom hasn't beaten you to them.

No Bosches. Once the book is out, that is it - there will never be another first ascent done. So don't waste your money.

I've now heard from two experts in English grammar and punctuation (Vicki and her sister Kaaren). I also ran it by my paralegal/right-hand woman/genius staff member Doris. All three agree that it is right as is for the reasons stated. Doris was actually adamant that the commas are exactly right.

Keeping in mind that Doris works weekends at her Husband's restaurant in MiWuk village, and that, at least, Munge goes to this restaurant often, I wouldn't recommend crossing her.

And actually I'll be working soon on one of three areas of good quality granite that I know of that aren't in the book and which have seen no development yet at all.

I've thought about this area in particular for a long time. I know how to get there and it's got lots of rock. I intend to call the area "The Missing Man Formations" in honor of my friend Luc Gruenther who died in January way too soon. Luc had been in the Air Force for ten years and so wasn't here at "home" enough to do much development. He loved his career flying, but was always a little jealous of all we were doing by way of route development up here. I'd hoped to get Luc to help me start putting routes in on these rocks, but now he can't. I'll look forward to showing Luc's mom, widow, and now two-month old daughter this beautiful, peaceful area at some point.
