Ranch Day
May 4, 2013  10:00AM - 3:00PM
Hunting Hollow Entrance and Parking Lot

Bring the family and learn about Ranch Life and the Ohlone Indians. Pet animals and meet some mini horses. There will be lots of crafts and exhibits. Bring your rubber boots and enjoy the nearby creek.

Check this notice the night before the event to see if it has been rained out. A new event using the rain date will appear if that happens.

Hot Dog Lunch available for $3.00.

Driving to Hunting Hollow in the morning, I was stuck behind a guy towing a tractor to display at Ranch Day all the way on Roop and Gilroy Hot Springs. When I started riding (7:45am), water ran down my back because I didn't have the cap tight enough on the Camelbak bladder. I stopped just past the first stream-crossing on Hunting Hollow Road and quickly tightened it. As I'm doing that, a PRA gal setting up Ranch day drives up wanting to drive her truck where I was working. She was nice about it though. I held her up maybe a minute but you know, I had to stop the water leak. That was solved and next I see a State Parks trail guy heading up Jim Donnelly. I recognized him from Paul L's photos (I mentioned that to him), “DPR's Monterey District Trails Supervisor John H i les”. Asked if this was in connection with the V•O•Cal trail building event next week? He replied vaguely that he was just checking out the condition of the trail today...not too chatty.

After all that, the rest of the day was casual. Took photos. Sessioned some of the tricky bits on Cross Canyon and KCC. Hot on the hillsides and in the valleys but cool on the ridges. Down right cold at the end of the day.

The above is a Chaparral Clematis aka Pipestems. Later in the season these will become beautiful puffballs (same exact plant). I rarely see this plant but strangely enough the other place I've found it is in Waterdog Park, Belmont, CA

What It Was Like Out There™………down in Kelly Cabin Canyon, it was hot:

Out of that valley, up here on Willow Ridge Road, there was a nice cool breeze and shade. I took a 30 minute lunch break here and felt much refreshed.

7:08pm - end of the day on Middle Steer Ridge, coast fog could be seen on the far horizon. Early afternoon I thought the heat would kill me and now I'm almost shivering.
