Ad Hoc trailwork day on Kelly Cabin Canyon Trail
I left Hunting Hollow at 8:20am and pedaled over the Kelly Cabin Canyon Trail with a pair of small loppers. Going up the Jim Donnelly Trail I observed the results of last weekend's
V•O•Cal trail building event. I put a few photos of what I saw at the bottom of this post. Up Steer Ridge » over the top of Willson Peak » fun times descending the Willson Peak trail » left on to Grizzly Gulch Trail » up Dexter (steep but expedient) » down to Kelly Lake (busy with campers and fishermen) … and I'm there!
The camera stayed in its case while I worked but I do have this one photo of Kelly Cabin Canyon Trail so you have a sense of what it's like:

…an overgrown wilderness trail along a small stream. The beginning and end are unmarked though someone has scratched "KCC↑" on a wood plank on the ground at the Kelly Lake end.
11am to 3:45 I attacked the foliage with the loppers, working SE to NW. Admittedly, I went light on a couple of Poison Oak sections. Self preservation! Maybe in the Fall I'll revisit and whack those back.
At the point where Kelly Cabin Canyon Trail turns uphill to meet the nearby Cross Canyon Trail, I stopped work, made a U-turn, and rode the trail back towards Kelly Lake. I was very happy with the improvement. Ugh, riding the final dry streambed crossing, my front tire rolled sideways on a loose "baby's head" river rock and I fell bruising my hip. Ouch!
Sore and a bit miffed at myself for the silly error, I took Coit Road up to Sierra View followed by Jackson Road/Elderberry to Jackson Field, What It Was Like Out There™:

Clear skys but the cool coast breeze kept the day comfortable. All that dry grass meant a healthy post-ride session of grass seed extraction from my shoes and socks!
This descent from Jackson Road was the final segment of the day and was a reversal of something I normally climb. Felt fresh.
One last adventure for the day; I checked this out to see if it went anywhere:

It didn't.
As that wrapped up, Brian W. happened along. He also was at the end of his day and we rode back to Hunting Hollow together:

6:45pm "Whew! Where's my car? Can just I coast the rest of the way?"

One week after the
May 10-12 2013 V•O•Cal trail building event on the Jim Donnelly Trail…
Visible from space, they made a 15' wide swath across the hillside:

The tread here was bumpy but some of their work was butter. I guess different skill levels within the group.
This was the only re-routing I saw:

The new part (to the right) was a quick, bumpy McLeod scrape, a very minimal effort.
This is in the forested area above the pond:
