Katie's Doing Well at U.C.S.B.
« on: November 09, 2013, 07:16:54 PM »
Well the kid called tonight. She's doing well in college, and having fun.

We've had some communications since she started down there. She's texted us. This was the second phone call. A week ago she emailed us in response to an email from me (although it was not the first time for email, it hasn't happened often). In her response email she admitted:

"Yo Dad,
Thank you, I actually kinda sorta barely miss you guys too.
Im going down to LA this weekend so I'll be having plenty of fun!

Love,
Pip Squeak"

See those words? She MISSES us! Wow!

Tonight's call was pretty fun. My mom and my sister are up (aunt Sheila is Katie's "super cool" aunt), so we put her on the speaker phone. We talked about roommates and Thanksgiving and classes (only two of her three classes have both the big-class lectures and small-class labs/sections). The dorm food isn't as good where she is as it was where we stayed for orientation.

I asked her about the photo of her on Facebook in which the brown colored beverage bottle in her hand was mostly cut off by the edge of the photo. She claimed it was "root beer," and after I called her a "lying sack of dog meat," she started laughing and admitted she'd been drinking a bit now and then (but she seems to have a certain contempt for the kids who are overdoing that).

And I totally cracked myself up when we talked about her classes for next quarter. Did I go too far when she told us about the biology class she'll be taking called "Human Sexuality?" I can't believe it, but I asked my own damn daughter if that class has a lab.

Anyway, I'll post more in a month or so, or after we see her at Thanksgiving.

The report cracked me up. Good to hear that Katie is having a good time there so she only sorta barely misses you.

My nephew is with us this weekend. We made him Facetime (yeah, a verb now) his mother and his father. He was reluctant, but he had been talking in the room for quite a while now, so that's good. I wish I had some humorous interactions to report, but right now, I'm drawing a blank. He doesn't have a humorous aunt.

Over all, he is doing okay at school and received good feedback from the dorm staff. He is still speaking a lot of Chinese with his fellow dorm students. And sometimes, he struggles with very basic common English that we say to him. Tomorrow, when I take him to the gym and shopping, I plan to only speak English to him. Boy, you are in America now and had better get used to it!

Inch by inch, I will get there.

the humorous part of talking with the nephew for me was when I asked about his history class.  He stated he could not talk about it since he did not understand anything since he just memorized the words for the answers.  That just seemed to much like a teenager putting off and adult.  We talked a bit more then he said he thought Peter the Great was uneducated.  Which is true to a point.

Katie has been working her butt off on an essay/midterm paper for her Poli-Sci class. It's going to be 45% of her grade in that class.

She asked us for comments last night. She sounded tired (and Vicki told her that that's how it goes in college). Eventually she sent us a copy of her work for some more input. Here's the subject line from her email (quoted verbatim):

Quote

Im quitting and becoming a stripper….

Ahem. Damn kids go off to college and they can't even punctuate...

So, your input is in punctuation?  ;D

Must be an awesome paper!
Inch by inch, I will get there.

Yeah, it wasn't her plan to become a stripper that bothered me, it was the missing apostrophe in the "Im" in the subject line.

Stripping superfluous punctuation from personal communications is the wave of the future!  I'm thinking commas, however.

She'll be home for the holidays this Friday evening (which means she'll be home for my birthday too). Looking forward to it.

Finals sounded hard for her, and she doesn't know her grades yet (but she did get an A- on an essay that will be 45% of her Political Science class grade; very impressive).

We did our annual, New Year's day measurement of the girls' height today. We use a level and a sharpie marker on the bedroom door.

Tricia grew a whopping 4 1/8 inches in 2013!

And, as if she needed it, Katie grew 3/4 inch.

She's heading back for quarter number two in a few days.

Continuing to do my job as dad, I sent Katie this educational email today under the title: "The Dangers of Being Hip:"

Some of us aren't particularly hip, "with it," or up to date. Others? Well, there are those who define "cool." Among other things, the cool ones have all the latest hot stuff. But hot stuff comes with risks. Such as this danger: [from a hot, hot hipster with all the right gadgets]:

"I was in a Starbucks Coffee recently when my stomach started rumbling and I realized that I desperately needed to fart. The place was packed but the music was really loud so to get relief and reduce embarrassment I timed my farts to the beat of the music. After a couple of songs I started to feel much better. I finished my coffee and noticed that everyone was staring at me. Suddenly I remembered that I was listening to my Ipod (with ear buds)…."
