wow, times have changed.  I always thought spring break was about sex or at least trying.

are times and people getting so uptight that no one can get laid?

Well, I'm smiling about as loudly as I can smile   ;D  ;D

Sit down. Wait for it.

Katie's now committed to go on our first, seven day, 2014 PCT leg with us. From Tuolumne Meadows to Sonora Pass. I mean committed too, as in "yes, I'll do that section with you and Tricia."

Now we all know that things can happen (I could break an ankle, lots of things might interfere). But what a great start.

Although this seven day trip is reserved for me and the girls, are any of you Mudders interested in one of the three day sections with us? We'll be cramming several three day backpacks into the first three weeks of August, and company (at least Mudder-type company) would be fun to have along. (And actually, given the milage involved on those legs, most of these would have been two day hikes, but we plan on reducing milage if anyone else does join us - not everyone is a hiking animal.)

I'm shocked!  and happy for you.

I'd like to come out and join ya for a bit of it. Got a map of the sections that you can send over with estimated dates?  Need to get it on calendar now.

Yes. subject to some fine tuning on the dates (from upthread):

1.  Late July, Tuolumne Meadows to Sonora Pass, 76 miles, seven days (allowing an extra day for peak-bagging - also, since this is one of the very, very best parts of the PCT, I'm saving it for only me and the girls; this is the trip Katie is likely to go on);

2. First half of August, Sonora Pass to Highway 4, 31.6 miles, two days (or maybe three if a friend or friends join us);

3. First half of August, Highway 4 to Highway 88, 28.8 miles, two or three days;

4. First half of August, Highway 88 to Highway 50, 14.3 miles, one day;

5. August or September, Desolation Wilderness, meaning Highway 50 to Forest Road 3, 32.3 miles, two or three days;

6. September, continuing to Highway 80, past Donner Pass, 32.0 miles, two or three days.

If any of you heard about the asshole dipshit, piece of trash who randomly decided to murder people with a gun at U.C.S.B., Katie posted to Facebook 18 hours ago that she was out of Santa Barbara and on her way to The Colorado River for a rafting trip with the Excursion Club. That was 10 hours before it happened.

Very happy to hear that, Brad.  I thought of your family when I heard the news. Fortunately her love of outdoor adventure kept her out of harms way - and a dash of luck.

Still a bit surprised by the number of emails and calls by concerned friends who'd heard of the shooting.

I so much agree with the dad who's son was killed - damn close to posting some "f&#k you" posts to the right wing/gun nut/dipshit types on Supertopo (I know the phrase I used is repetitively redundant). Think I'll just keep it less angry here instead.

How crushed and devastated a parent must be when they have to bury a child. Although I almost can't imagine it, U.C.S.B. parents are going through it right now because of (yet another) mentally ill young man with way-too easy access to a quick and easy way to kill.

This is really messed up. And as usual the mainstream media is neglecting all the important facts. When is America going to tackle the root causes of these things that the media refuses to even look at: Racsim, objectification of women, guns, etc.

I have stated many times, yes the Constitution guarantees the right to own firearms, However, the Constitution does not guarantee the right for idiots to own firearms.

Growing up in the country with loaded firearms in the house the rules governing firearms were very strict and enforced with an iron fist.  I fired off a ridiculous number of lead growing up.  I just see them as a tool to be used and their purpose is pretty damn narrow.  When I see folks holding them out there and fawning over them like some hot woman I always get this weird uncomfortable feeling.  I think there should be strict rules around owning a firearm but then that is how I was brought up around them.

To much crazy shooting going on out there.

We got a call from Katie last night; she's shocked - shocked - that her first year is already almost over  ;D

She's obviously learning the university stuff, but apparently the cold hard facts of life are sinking in too. Among these, apparently, are: time doesn't stop for anyone and youth is fleeting.
