Where should I move?
« on: July 05, 2005, 04:51:38 PM »
Anyone have any suggestions on where I should move? Since I'll either be on  -site or working from home, I'm not really limited by commute (yet). Don't need a lot of storage space because I can leave a bunch of stuff at my sister's in Davis.

Thoughts?

I was pondering this same question for you two weeks ago.

Anywhere Pleasanton and East is good for getting to the crags early and finding women that live in the mountains. However, if climbing mostly on the weekend, then as long as you get to the mountains when your partners are there, viola.

Living within the confines of the minor Bay Area, e.g. Pleasanton West, provides for not having to commute with tards on those days you need to visit your clients assuming that many will be located in Silicone Valley. HUGE quality of life issue.

South SJ provides easy access to Pinns in the Winter.  And college co-eds.   And do not forget Super Taqueria!!!

North Bay gets you close to sis and Tahoe.

Sacramento gives even greater access to Tahoe and pretty easy access to Sonora, Valley, Meadows since not dealing with inner bay area tards. However, client commute during midweek for Silicone Valley will suxors.

On the whole, I'd say Fremont would be a nice compromise, except for the afternoon smell that blows in from Alviso and the back bay sometimes.  East Bay is quality, but watch for bad neighborhoods, and remember how far it will be to get to Castle after work.

If you live around Sunnyvale we'll meet at your place before heading to Castle for after work or dawn patrol sessions.  Stock the beer or die.

What are the range of options.  How often will you work in the bay area?  Can you be south of here?  Monterey?  Can you be out the the foothill east of Sac.?  Up around Sonora?  Mariposa?  Pleasanton is not to bad of a middle road.  If you get out of the bay area proper housing becomes and option.

Yeah, not sure what to do. I know I would get more bang for my buck in the Pleasanton/Dublin/Livermore area and would be that much closer to the Sierra, but is that area an OK place to live? Seems to me it is not much different than Campbell or Santa Clara and Castle Rock would be near impossible to get to on most work days (not that I can boulder for shit now anyways).

Being up in SF would be cool, but I don't want to deal with the parking situation up there.

North Bay I would be lucky to rent a cardboard box on street corner for under $1200/mo., no? Good biking up that way though...I dunno, maybe Santa Rosa area? That seems like an ugly commute if I had to visit clients  on the Peninsula.

Morgan Hill...zzzzzz (unless things have changed since I've been gone).

Many of the clients are in and between SF and SJ, although I also will have clients that are in LA and completely outside CA. Totally depends on the project and I will need to be on-site for probably 1 out of every 3 months (home on weekends), so proximity to an airport wouldn't be a bad thing either. Hell, I may need to go to Europe and/or Asia every once in a while.

But since this is the case, I'm not sure it really matters that much where I am. I know that the current consultants live in San Mateo, SF, Hayward, San Ramon, and Palo Alto.

What to do, what to do...?

My victims are in the attic where they belong.

Live on a sailboat in Sausalito.  That would

attract the women.  Plus then it would be easy

to splurp.  Morgan Hill would not be that bad.

Coe every day.  Castle still would be doable.

Pleasanten would suck except it makes the

Sierra a bit closer and rent is just a bit cheaper.

there is at least one good dive bar.  It may just

be me but I want out of the Bay Area.

HAVING a boat in Sausalito would attract the women. LIVING on one...not sure you would find too many takers on that, especially if you suck at sailing.   Besides, my dad ruined the whole sailing life for me anyhow.

The City.  No way.  You will never get to Castle.  Just the thought of it makes me want to stick a piton through my skull.  You further away from everything except the North Coast.

Monterey.  You can dive every night after work.  And, the women there all have money.  You can drive to Santa Cruz in the evening if ya want granola.

Looks like I will be working Sat.  Sunday don't know.

I would say FU all and live up on the Marin Headland.  Dive the open Ocean nightly.  EIther that or Monterey but then I am a bit anti-social.
