Calaveras Dome
« on: March 21, 2014, 09:47:25 AM »
Any of you folks been out there? I'm interested in Silk Road, Wall of the Worlds, Gemini Crack and open to other suggestions. Any beta on camping or routes would be awesome!

Jim McC and his brothers did a "few" routes back in the day on that chunk of stone.

If driving down Panther Road past Ham's station....take careful note of the Forest Service board you will see as you get off of the HWY onto the road....

Look closely and you'll see..."5.10 Anything" or "5.10 whatever"

Priceless for those who "know".

I thought Mungie had a picture of it.

Gemini is best done during a howling gail....

You'll crush for sure. Been down there climbing 3 times or so and still haven't been on WallOTW. Life is to short, go crush. I've gotta assume the high road
via Hamm's station is open but a quick call to confirm might be worth the pennies.

Camping will be easy, always has been and if you don't like the forest service cg (stayed there and never had another camper) you can more or ;ess camp anywhere. One trip a bud and I started with a case of Sierra and slowly deposited our empties next to our full cooler over 3 days until we left.

Its a special place and enjoy

Didn't see the sign. Actually I didn't even look for it. Didn't get close enough to anyone to smell the Lodi scents.

The place is rad and chill.

Went up Wall of the Worlds today and it was pretty much as good or better than anything in Yosemite. Every pitch was amazing. Got up to pitch 6 which is runout face knobs and dikes, and felt like I was having an off day despite having passed all the 5.10 cruxes. Decided to bail mid-pitch. Didn't feel like death would have been fun today.

5.8 or 5.13 sometimes it just doesn't feel right and you go down. Feels good to make those choices and have a partner who understands and supports. Haven is awesome.

Just returned home and learned Sean Leary died. I don't know about this BASE jumping stuff. Such a talented and special person gone too soon.

Agreed and I've backed off climbs at nearly every grade and partners stronger than I have supported it. The mind usually speaks for the mouth.

Cal dome is magic though.
