School Daze
« on: May 02, 2014, 05:16:13 AM »
I went out to the Upper Crust yesterday morning with an old friend. I was surprised to find multiple top-ropes set up at Tourist Trap, the Teaching Rock and First Sister.  Conversations with some kids waiting on the trail for their turn to climb elicited the info that they were from a private school in Oakland and were staying in the campground for three days.  The equipment looked new and well placed.  I'm thinking somebody paid big bucks to some folks who know what they're doing.  Does anybody know how guide/teaching arrangements are made with the Park Service?  I imply no wrong-doing here - I'm just curious how it's done and who's doing it.

I have no idea about how the guide thing works but ran into some jerk a couple of years back on a family trip.

A large group of "kids" (all college grads) took over our group site and the one next to it on the Sunday night after the MoM. They were with a group that did just what you are talking about - taught and guided whole schools worth of kids (and not just climbing).

I forget the name of the company they worked for. Maybe "Naturalists at Large?" We spent that evening with a bunch of them around our fire. Smart, good kids who all really seemed to have it together.

They were going to be there for weeks, rotating schools through.

Every once in a while the posts here make me realize how normal and sane I am, and how many freak/weirdos I hang out with.

A normal person would have zilch inclination to write a guidebook.

Truer words were never spoken.

I think that's why I like some "reality" TV. Makes me feel so normal.

The guy who climbed with me at Upper Crust still (25 years after he first mentioned it!) wants to arrange a naked Tyrolean between the fingers.  He doesn't have me on his list of participants.

There are very (VERY) few posters here who could participate in that event without making most of us ill  ;)

Sounds like a job for the Tepui gals :)

clink and beanolar could team up too and the blinding white would keep everything obscured :)
