We're heading out this evening for the drive to Quincy. We'll stay there tonight and get an early start tomorrow on "Volume 27" of this ongoing adventure. This time it will just be the five of us (me, Tricia, and Vicki, and our two gorgeous canines). We may take one of our eight days to summit Lassen Peak (the high point of Shasta County BTW, and that's an oddity, but not a typo!).

We've also finalized plans for our August 3rd to 7th PCT trip, and Katie will be joining us  ;D   ;D   ;D

Meanwhile, Tricia is on Bookface now (some of you are her friends). This is what she posted there about the upcoming four weeks (PCT, then Girl Scout Camp, then PCT, then Girl Scout Camp; and then she starts Eighth Grade):

Quote

Heading off tomorrow for a four-week long absence from home, with only one night (not 24 hours, mind you) in my own bed. The rest will be spent hiking and having fun at two Girl Scout camps: Golden Timbers and Two Sentinels (the second one is a backpacking camp-really looking forward to that!!). Luckily my parents get some time at home while I'm away. smile emoticon When I get back, I'll have two days to rest before school starts up again. Can't wait!!!

I can't wait for the PCT parts of this, but I will sure miss her when she's gone from home at the camps. Still, I can't wait myself to hear how she liked the backpacking Girl Scout camp - it'll be her first time ever backpacking without me along.

We passed halfway on the PCT today (halfway from Mexico to Canada!). The trail crosses Highway 36 only 7 miles from the town of Chester, so we went there instead of looking for camping (after 19.4 miles of hiking).

Great trip so far, although our first day absolutely kicked our butts (90 degree temps, 16.8 miles of hiking and 4,700 feet of elevation gain). Neither of us can remember a harder day of hiking since June of 2009 with Katie (that day was 19.0 miles in almost as hot conditions with 6,000 feet of gain).

Lassen Peak looms over us now (so cool).

Cool - have you been to the summit of Lassen before?  We hiked it before we moved to CA - beautiful up there!

No, we haven't summited Lassen. We likely will Friday though; the five mile round trip should be just right before we drive down 395 to Lee Vining for the wedding.

J.C, I am reading "Assembling California." John McPhee is such a good author. He's telling stories and the geology comes along as he does so.

Well, I hope you learned your Lassen that you shouldn't hike when it is that hot out.

ION, it dumped on the Pass this afternoon. Felt like that trip where mudworm and I climbed at East Bound slab and got rained and thunder and lightning'd off. Except this time I was just enjoying being out and chilling. Saw RP3 up there. I think they hunkered down for the storm instead of hiking out in it.

Done with the trail for this trip. Heading to Lee Vining tomorrow for the wedding on Saturday (traveling by way of the summit of Lassen Peak  ;D  ).

We hiked 101.1 miles in seven days.

I'll do a trip report after we get home.

Agreed!  Wish JC and I could have joined the fun!  Would be a lot more fun than dealing with auditors ;D
