2' of light fresh on the mountain this morning (knee to waist deep).  Only lower lifts were running.  Tight tree runs were the ticket (keeps the snow boarders out).  YeeHaw!

El Hi-Jacko

No rain at Pinns since 9:30 this morning and good sunshine but low temps today(high only hit 52 briefly).

Looks good for the long weekend.

Long? I thought all weekends were at least three days (and often four). Right?

Work may get started on clearing one of the two blocked roads to our houses. many slides and trees down. 43 blocked roads, many with multiple issues, at the end of the storms. Bear Creek and Old San Jose  have had major "slip outs"(where half the road falls off). A lot of folks use these alternates instead of HWY 17, so the commute is going to get worse.

I'd recommend you slip out the back Jack...and thanks for the heads up on HWY 17

The next 24 hours at our elevation (from NWS):

This Afternoon:  Rain and snow showers. The rain and snow could be heavy at times. Steady temperature around 37. Breezy, with a southeast wind around 23 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.

Tonight: Rain and snow showers, becoming all snow after 10pm. The rain and snow could be heavy at times. Steady temperature around 38. Breezy, with a south southeast wind 18 to 24 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 9 to 13 inches possible.

Um, it's not rain though. Snow line is midway up the Twain Harte grade and it's pounding snow at home. Oh well, when the going gets tough, I... look forward to sunny days in Joshua Tree?

It's been steady rain here all day and at Pinns since about 10:30 this morning.

No end in sight until middle of next week.

As soon as the sun comes back out I will likely be back at Pinns every day that I don't have school.

I was out yesterday - Kermit and environs. I'm retired. You folks are all too young, except for Brad.

They say a 30 ft root base and big trees slid down. Both roads are blocked and powers out. More is on it's way.

I should have stolen JC's sleepy ninight blankey when I was borrowing the rock tumblers from him yesterday.  He told me to not bother tumbling the stones and just throw them outside in this kind of weather.  ;)

Damn scary dude.
Once the ground becomes saturated, slopes will continue to fail every time we get significant rain.
Here is a shot I use for my classes and it is also one of my field trip sites.
Soquel Creek and Eureka Canyon are fault-controlled.
They both sit on the western side of a compressional bend in the San Andreas Fault where it slices through the SC Mountains and is causing rapid uplift along a series of thrust faults.
All the slopes are oversteepened and are further destabilized by the faults.
There are alternating layers of stronger rocks (sandstone) and weaker rocks (shale) and they are folded, tilted and faulted.
