Climber Coffee on Sunday Mornings?
« on: February 27, 2017, 08:16:12 AM »
Apparently I've been away a long time. There is a climber coffee on Sunday mornings now (like the C4 and JT CC sessions)?

Seen on NPS Pinnacles Facebook...

Pinnacles National Park If you're new to climbing in Pinnacles or want to talk with fellow climbers about the latest conditions, stop by the Bear Gulch Nature Center for Climber Coffee on Sunday mornings. You bring the mug; we'll bring the coffee!

But no post about it here?

We went in on some mornings either last year or the year before?
I didn't think they were still doing it - plus we usually drive up to the last lot and then forget.
I thought the last time we stopped in the rangers that had been hosting it were leaving and no one planned to continue.
We'll have to try and remember to stop in and say hi since I have plans to do multiple jaunts up Condor Gulch.

Yeah, for a couple years now. I've attended once.

It's interesting though that it hasn't caught on quite like the coffees in other places (to my perception that is). Maybe it hasn't been around long enough? It's certainly not like Josh where you can just stroll over to the coffee from your campsite. Many climbers at Pinns are just looking for parking and then getting out to the crag once they do.

looks easy from here

I wonder how much if it is there's just less to talk about? Unlike Yosemite, where there are long, commiting routes with large catchment basins above them that may be waterfalls halfway up but you can't see that from the start, at Pinnacles what you see in the parking lot is largely what you get once out on the rock. And if it's not, move around to another aspect of the formation and you're clear.

I think part of it is the disconnect between various parking areas and where they hold it. Most people that aren't regulars are going to stop at the main visitor center on the east side to get a pass or directions. Regulars get there and are ready to go, self-sufficient and possibly wanting to beat the rush if heading to popular areas. If they were set up at the upper parking I think it would attract more people since we often strike up conversations there before heading out. Unfortunately it's cold up there in the mornings and the park staff would have the extra hassle of hauling stuff back and forth.

Make a showing if you can and let them know we appreciate it. Almost all the staff have an interest in climbing and are really friendly. The coffee is good too.  :yesnod:

couple years?  They hide it well. :)

Yeah, upper lot is the place to be with hot coffee because it is cold up there.

Then again, if it is cold most of us don't sit around waiting for the sun to hit.

The glaring fact "and donuts" is missing sez it all.

They are also looking for volunteers to host if anyone is interested.

We are seeking local climbing enthusiasts that are friendly and knowledgeable about Pinnacles climbing and associated resource issues.  We want those people who care about the park and its resources. Morning folks who like a good cup of coffee and enjoy speaking to the public and sharing their knowledge would be ideal.
Do you want to volunteer on Sundays mornings in Feb and March at the Nature Center on the East side to help us host Climber Coffee from 8 am - 11 am?
