I refuse to click on the link. Other people on the net say they have the same message and it is $39/month.
I'm not paying and I wouldn't even know where to start replacing all the pictures in my posts if I could figure out another way to do it.
They are gone.
C'est la vie.

Interesting, all my pics are hosted there and they're still showing up for me. Though I might go ahead and try to take a note of which ones are where so I can replace them if they disappear.

same here.  I think it targets accounts that are using a large portion of storage.  needless to say I will use google or something else from here on.

sucks that the archival aspect of the photos here and on supertopo will be lost. bummer.

They are a business, will they get put out, with a move like this? It pisses me off that the archive photos are now to be held captive. Why not slap a meter on accounts from this point forward for usage and preserve content under the former agreement? Seems to me the current approach will not be good for business, but then Wells Fargo is still around.

My account currently shows 39 percent full.

This would make sense.
On our recent travels we saw a guy with a t shirt that said common sense is so rare these days it should be considered a super power.

What I don't understand the most is the price. Did someone move a decimal point by mistake? How do you go from years of free straight to $40 a month? Seems to me they should start at around $5-6 and creep it up over a few years.

Unless someone's intentionally trying to drive Photobucket under...

this is the nature of the cloud, and one of it's pitfalls.  You are at the mercy of egress.  I always tell the business, the cloud is fine but always own your data ( have a local copy ).

hybrid deployment? or merely local back up?  ... as the best of all possible configurations?

Assuming something other than catastrophic failure by the CSP, the CSP should provide a way to export customer data. But that doesn't mean it is formed well, or that your TTR is going to be quick.

Print out your pictures
Then you have a hard copy.

Even better get the pictures put into slides.

Amazon prime lets you hold pictures, but what if you drop prime?

Back to a local copy.

I use the cloud to make it easy to share data which I think is the purpose.  Using it for a backup for pictures is questionable since most free backup solutions reduce the resolution, but you do at least have a backup that is good for most purposes.  The one problem that I see with the cloud is egress.  You can always get your data out of the cloud, the question will always be what are you willing to pay.  If you own your data it is less likely that you can be leveraged by a vendor.

Backup solutions are always tricky affairs with different advantages and disadvantages.

I was shifting to biz cloud situations...  and To be clear, I think you mean 'possess' your data. You 'own' your data unless you assign it for consideration (e.g. Facebook's language used to be pretty questionable)... and... still have it hosted by a CSP. CSPs that don't have an export function using standards will quickly find themselves unable to compete in the business place.
