I May Quit Climbing
« on: September 06, 2017, 09:04:30 PM »
Yes, it's that time of year again. My AAC books package came and I've been thumbing through Accidents in North American Climbing. Sheesh.

Although I haven't read it yet, I did see one report that carried the explanation/title: "Bike Crash During Descent From Climb." The incident in question apparently happened in Washington state. DES, am I going to see your name in this one?

Quit reading paper books as well. Switch to digital.

Dec 23, 2008 - A father died of a rare flesh-eating disease which infected his body through a tiny paper cut on his arm, an inquest has heard. Tony Williamson, 60, developed the deadly blood infection necrotizing fascilitis, which affects fewer than one in a million people. Within six days of ..

It must be caught quickly and be treated with antibiotics and IV fluids
Berger was hospitalized at Kennedy Hospital in Cherry Hill, and was saved by its nationally-recognized Sepsis Program

Brad, if you swell up, the medical personal will have to cut your shorts off of you. There will be no mending them then.

Finally got the MRI on the left shoulder...surprise, surprise torn labrum. Yeah, I could have told them!

I might be forced to take year break or so.

The upside, they give you cool meds after surgery and I get another cool scar. Downside, I get to do 6months of rehab.

Mr Mud is safer on his Mtn bike, just not his widow maker fancy road bike.

torn labrum.

Dang.  Sorry to hear it.  Hoping your PT and drugs are better than mine were.  SLAP and detatched biceps tendon a few years back - pre climbing days.

Prolly from a mtn bike crash.

Or four.

The "best" climber is the one having the most fun.

f4 was it from the mtb crash or from climbing?  Will this keep you off the bike?

Ha, no the mtn bike crashes were Not the culprit (there were a few that day of varying severity), which was funny to show up to pt torn up and a nasty bruise above the tendor area on the shoulder..."so what did you do this weekend?" Nothing much just some riding...with a spill or 2.

I am riding until I get surgery...can't make it any worse.

I already had a small tear done back in 02!

I need to talk to my pt guy to have him interpret the MRI language...suspect new tear near bicep insertion. We had thought it was bad tendonitis.

The right shoulder was a full separation!!! And yeah that bicept part was a bitch. The left is not so bad....which is good.

This was due to body falling, but hand stayed put....damn gravity got me again.

Who wants to buy a nice bi-colored 9.8 sterling rope??

How did he climb up with his mtb?

That's what I thought too.

Turns out that he used the bike on otherwise closed logging roads to approach (and solo) a very remote alpine route. That went fine. Within 250 feet of starting the biking part of the descent, he crashed (with broken bones).

Just re-proves what Mud has already proven. Mountain biking is more dangerous than climbing  ;)

I think I probably do have more riding related injuries than I have climbing related.

Old saying goes if you are not crashing, you are not riding hard enough.
Words to live by.

Jealous there brad, let me know if you need 3 nuts for the route. I swear that was what I would bring next time. Enjoy!!!

Snake Dike is definitely for the young. JC and KC would love that route! My knees ache remembering the hike back.
