Heads Up: Mandatory Closure on southern part of Machete Ridge
« on: February 02, 2018, 10:21:30 AM »
Heads up everyone - there is a Mandatory Closure that just went into effect for the south end of Machete. I just updated the first page of the Climbing Advisories / Closures thread with the relevant details on which routes will be affected, but Old Original is definitely one of them.

In the spirit of full disclosure - the closure was put into effect because there is a pair of California condors that is nesting on the east side of Machete. The condor pair nested in the same area successfully in 2016, and they are trying again this year. The closure was put into effect to prevent people from disturbing the condor pair's nest effort.

The Mandatory Closure is supported by the park superintendent and the condor biologist crew at the park because condors are critically endangered, so we have a federal mandate to protect them, and to keep them from being disturbed while they are nesting.

There will be closure signs posted on the access trail leading south around the base of Machete, after Dos Equis and Corona (which are still open). Please don't hike back up in there... There will be condor biologists monitoring the site, and they will call in law enforcement rangers if they see visitors hiking - or especially climbing - in the area.

Thanks for the support!

Gavin, thanks for the notice.  Just for clarification, am I correct to understand that this closure would apply to all routes on the southern face of Machete that go to the top, i.e, "Derringer", "Serpiente de Cascabel", and the climb to the left of "Sepriente de Cascabel" that goes up the southwest face to join "Colliver-Denny"?

Ok, now I see in another post that indeed all of the climbs I mentioned plus more are included.

Congratulations to the condor pair on the renewal of their marriage vows and may the consummation be fruitful!

Old Original 1-5 is included in the 'sensitive' aka closed list... for anyone not familiar that hasn't looked at the full posting on the closure thread. This is the one the groms get stoked for and don't know about this site and will likely bring unintentional rule breakers. Hopefully the signs are big and obvious.

Outfit the monitors with sniper rifles loaded with tranquilizer darts. Mount a full length mirror with cross hairs on it next to the closure signs for disclosure.

There are detailed lists posted at the trail heads.
I've been corresponding with Mtn Proj to make sure they have the correct dates and they also have links set up to the park's website and FOP. There are also the signs stating go no further on posts as you reach entry points for climber access trails.
