Middle Fork Area Take Two
« on: July 08, 2018, 10:19:14 PM »
Just a quick note.  Will write up later.  About 20 miles and about 7500 feet.  Got to the car with the headlamp but got in a bit earlier than last time.  No dog this time.  Big loop with lots of interesting terrain and endless bushwhacking.  Bugs were out of control, l literally would have 100 swarm around me at a time if not more.  In my ears, behind my glasses everywhere.  Toward the end I was kind of sort of but not really starting to be able to deal with it.  I think I was out there for about 14 hours.

I have told many people, my Mom had to go to Heaven because I put her through Hell.

Starting around 2nd grade I would take off out the back door and try and return when I got hungry enough.  Thinking back I have no idea how she dealt with this.  By 3rd or 4th grade I can remember running home trying to beat the setting Sun.  I would quite often leave early.  I think they tried everything possible to stop me.  I would think she must have worried a bit from time to time.  Then there were the Hospital visits and near Hospital visits.  What does a Mother do when an 9 year old kid disappears with the rising Sun and returns after it sets?

I sent a text to Mud in the afternoon and did not get response back. I had a sinking feeling, "oh no, he went out again!"

By around 10pm, I called before going to bed and to my relief, he picked up. Apparently, he only just got back to his car.

Me: "You know, it's not a good idea to go out there all by yourself without telling anyone where you go, what your plan is, and when you plan to return..."

Mud: "Oh, okay... I guess....  I suppose I can send you a text when I get out."

Me: "No! Send text to F4! I can't handle the suspense!"

;D  F4, you are a strong man, right?  ;D

Inch by inch, I will get there.

Yeah text me when you get out.

I’ll have a beer for you afterwards.

If I don’t, I’ll know to call someone. 👍

Better yet share your location on. Your phone.
Much easier to keep track of you. That’s what is did to my wife.

I typically put the phone in Airplane mode to extend the battery life.

Passive GPS would still work, so if you get in a jam with shit reception but a text might go through, text the lat long from the Compass App (easiest way to copy it out).

This is exactly why I put my phone in airplane mode.  I use the GPS function to record tracks, keeping the phone in airplane mode extends the battery.  I even brought a small battery pack to charge my  phone which I had to do.  I did run into an interesting feature last weekend, at the end of the day I went to end the track but could not get into the phone since it would not unlock until I had reception.  I thought this is bad since even without reception if your phone is on it still, in simple terms, puts out an ICMP ping to any reachable towers.  The ping can be used to triangulate a location even though it is not enough to send text or phone calls.  This feature helped find the lost family in northern CA that winter.  It did not provide the exact location but it gave them an idea.  I do not think this is done the same with it in airplane mode.  Not sure though and I was going to email Apple.

Never seen this before! That is odd and that is bad! You've had your iPhone 6 for more than 2 years, isn't it time to upgrade?

I typically put the phone in Airplane mode to extend the battery life.

You already have one jumper kit from Costco that include a huge power bank. And come to think of it, in the tire well under the trunk floor in that CR-V is another jumper kit I had kept with the car (never used it). That gives you another power bank. Bring one with you (and charging cable), and your phone can last almost forever. (I believe your weight weenie era has passed.)

That reminded me ... Those power bank blocks need to recharged once every four months to keep them full. You can set a recurring calendar event for reminder, so you don't forget to do it.

P.S. I heard on Sharp End podcast that, even when your phone shows no service (from your carrier) and if you need to call 911, call anyway (but not in airplane mode). All carriers are required to service all 911 calls.
Inch by inch, I will get there.

Nah, too much thinking. What would Clink do?

strava is addicting to track ones suffering...

Mr mud, please carry the 11 essentials and be safe.

Sure, share your location before you go, it never hurts.

Let’s hope you find a sweet crag that we can rap bolt!

Now Mungie, looks like you are becoming Apple savvy!!
