Pinnacles Riddles and Sayings
« on: October 10, 2018, 06:43:16 PM »
I can't take credit for any of these but they are some of the best I can conjure.

Q: Why are so many old Pinnacles routes like Scottish cuisine?

A: They are based on a dare.

If you find a good hold at Pinnacles, put it in your pocket and take it home.

Pinnacles is not climbing. Pinnacles is a ridiculous obstacle course.

No route is completely worthless. It can always serve as a bad example.

Testing and using holds - these can be silent thoughts or said out loud (I usually say them aloud)

If this goes...I'm gone...

"Ridiculous obstacle course!"

Haha I know that one!

My favorite saying about pinnacles:

 "I f***ing hate Pinnacles."

I've heard it many times, both from strangers and friends. And everytime I tell them how much I love Pinns, I relish the wondering what they think of me. Perhaps some crazy person? An oddball?

As long as people hate Pinnacles, I can mine some semblence of individuality, and hope that this beautiful place may never become TOO popular. I've never had to wait for a climb at Pinns... mostly because I avoid Weekends.

Oh yeah, my other common mental thought while climb at pinns goes something like **knock knock**... "Okay, just a liiiiiittle bodyweight."

There are no old bold pinns climbers

You can always tell a real pinns climber because he knocks on the holds.

My response when I hear that a climber can't stand adventure:

"Then maybe you should just go bowling."

 Pull down, not out.
Causing trouble when not climbing.

When Aaron inquired about the anchor bolts on Condor Condiment, Waldo's responce was something like "Don't lean back".

When bolting a new route:
If this (hook, slung knob, one good hold I'm standing on..etc) blows... I'm f*cked!

looks easy from here

I've never understood the vitriol. But yeah, as long as it continues it works to the benefit of our little club of cobble enthusiasts.

An accurate quote. Holmgren put in two good Stars, but it's 85 meters off the deck and fifteen years is fifteen years. That green alien placement to the right is very reassuring - well, somewhat reassuring.

"If this goes, i'm gone" - one of my favorite

I used to repeat "I pee my pants." "I pee my pants" on cruddy leads.
It's fine, except when someone is mid cliff and can hear you.
Now everybody knows.

I believe your exact words were "I just peed my pants" - won't be long until we get you back on the sharp end :yesnod:   :yikes:

uhoh, busted!

I also remember saying "ho lee fuk", "some ting wong" and "bang ding ow" on precipitous leads.

Those were ficticious offensive crash pilot names that some how made it to the evening news. Also relevant to climbing.

after reviewing a set of pics at ubergoobers…

Mud says "hey, that's my truck"

My reply "what? dude, that's my truck. Joshua Tree circa early 90s"

/conversation proceeds where it turns out Mud was the guy we shared a campfire with in Joshua Tree over xmas one year. In this campfire session he regales us with stories of Pinnacles, the style, the rock quality, the environment, the spires.

A few months later I'm making my first trip to Pinnacles and leading Rat Race without the beta.

"Doesn't the high peaks have an alpine quality to it?" - mtnyoung to me one weekend in the 90s up at Tuff Dome

/ me recognizing clear as day that this coastal range has an extraordinary alpine quality to it. Prior to that day I would have said it was practically a desert. I have been blown away by the greenery there ever since.
