Pinnacles Cleanup!
« on: January 06, 2019, 01:00:57 AM »
EDIT: Since Pinnacles is now shutdown all the way, the event is canceled unless/until the situation changes again. This is actually good news since it will protect the park until the government is running again.

***

During the government shutdown, there have been a lot of stories about National Parks getting trashed and neglected. Pinnacles National Park is partially open, but struggling with extremely reduced staffing. I'm going there to clean up as much as I can on Saturday the 12 from 10AM-2PM, and would welcome anybody to join me. Please come for a bit if you can, especially if you have a pickup truck, and forward to folks who might be interested! Let's show how much the national parks mean to us.

Facebook event with most up to date info is here: https://www.facebook.com/events/543999376117431/permalink/544021326115236/

This is an excellent idea and I will be there.

For those who refuse to be part of the hopefully failed Russian Revolution of 2016 - ?, can you post details here also since I refuse to look at anything on Facebook?

I would also like to suggest something else to help the park.  Many if not all of the park officials are not being paid and have no idea when their next paycheck will be coming.  I will be bringing a non-perishable food item to this event that will be available to any park employee.  There are good laws that prevent direct donations of items to individual park employees, which make this difficult, so I will leave my item at a location to be determined later for anyone to pick up.  (I am not complaining about these laws since there is a valid reason for them, they are something that the current hopefully soon to be entire federal inmate administration seems to be ignoring.) I hope others will join me in this effort because I really appreciate the park staff and what they are going through.

Does that mean Gavin is fishing from the reservoir?
I heard it was stocked with fish.

I'd start eying them pigs......just saying.
I'm not worthy.

Thanks, JC.  I will be there.  I hope the ground fog is not too bad driving on Hwy. 145 that day.

Hopefully all this rain and the cold will keep the number of visitors down.
When we did poo poo patrol last Wednesday it wasn't too bad.
We picked up 8 to 10 piles of teepee in the area behind the restrooms - one with dirt or poo and a rock piled on top.
The trails were in good shape down low in the valley all the way to the Flumes - seemed like more folks were headed up Juniper Canyon so that section probably needs some attention. Kat and Amber picked up a few things when they went to Chockstone this past Thursday (just trash - no poo). We talked to some folks on the west side the previous week and they said some people were climbing over the locked gates and going through the caves. The rain should put a damper on any more of that.

West side is now closed. This cleanup idea was a nice gesture but I had a feeling it wouldn't keep things from shutting down.

In a way I hate to say it, but I am glad.  In my not so humble opinion they should close all the national parks and monuments.  People do not seem to be able to responsibly self-regulate.  The toilets not being open is problematic but if people simply walked a couple hundred feet out and dug a small hole, for the most part, the bathroom issue would go unnoticed.  Simple things, park responsibly, pick up your own trash, etc.  Too many people just cannot do it.

You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy (said originally about Mos Eisley spaceport, but in many ways applicable to most of humanity).
