Friend and partner Dave Gregory passed recently at age 84. We shared many Yosemite and Sierras climbs. He was the best crack climber I ever knew. I was better on friction and face, so we were able to get up quite a few things we wouldn't have dared try without the other guy. He put up his last new route on grit when he was 79. Thanks for the condolences, all.

Did you ever get a chance to climb with him in Britain?

My friend Ron Skelton has a similar friend, Andy, who he's climbed with a bunch in Yosemite, but with whom he's also managed to climb on several of the famous British crags.

It is one of my deepest regrets that I didn't climb with him on grit. I visited him a few years ago, but he'd quit by then. I was amused, however, because his daughter arranged some activities for us. I think she feared that we'd sneak off and get into trouble - a not unreasonable concern.

Some of the finest friction stone you will ever climb on. Truly gritty feel to it. Dries super fast with the Atlantic breezes.

My one trip was a delight. Except for the midges and the sheep shit everywhere. Lol

Dave had no love for midges, but he spent a lot of time in their company. He liked to walk to keep fit and he considered anything less than ten miles a waste of his time. Some of his tales of wet nights spent in sheep sheds and caves after a day of climbing make camp 4 denizens of the golden age seem like fresh princes of Bel Aire.
