She's 18 years old today. No fooling.

And life is weird, her senior year in high school seems over early, her sister has moved back home. And she gave us all a great big smile when she woke up this morning.

Happy Birthday to T.  I also wished her HB on FB!  I can't believe she is 18.  I had a memory pop up on FB from 5 years ago when we were all camping and climbing in the Hills.  Time flies!

Also sending birthday wishes to a great young lady.
My condolences on her missing out on all the things she was probably looking forward to this year.
I'm glad she is still smiling.

I doubt it will be any consolation but...

My senior year ended (my last day of class) was on April Fool's day. I always thought that was quite fitting.

There was enough snow on the ground that I wrote a parting message to the school in the parking lot on the way out.

I never had a senior picture taken or participated in any way in graduation.

I did not know these things. And look how well you turned out :)

Speaking of today's date, I absolutely loved this short thread on Mountain Project. Very, subtle:

I left out a lot of the juicy details so T wouldn't be tempted to emulate my fine example. :yesnod: :yikes:

I read what you wrote to Tricia. She said "wow, John Cook? He dropped out of high school?"

See? You've pulled yourself so far up by your boot straps that people are surprised to hear this.

And thanks for leaving out the juicy parts (although she gets some "juicy parts" from her older sister).

Strange how things can get misinterpreted. I did not drop out.
I had enough credits to leave school a third of a year early. The terms were weird in KY - 3 terms a year.
I coasted through my last year and two thirds but still maintained a B average.

School was different in Ohio too. Junior High was 7-9 and High School was 10-12. I went to 10th in Ohio.

Happy Birthday Tricia! It is hard to believe you are 18.

OK, we get it now. And I've heard some of that story over the years. I still wonder what word(s) you spelled out in the snow....

Well, that was an interesting way to spend an 18th birthday. Take out food with mom, dad and sister in the van. To Twain Harte Lake to prop open the doors and watch a beautiful sunset.

None of her friends, no party, no nothing.

Shawn and Julie drove over and chatted though.

I bet she'll never forget it.

That sounds decent.

Looking at the date I realized she turned 18 at the start of 4-20...dude.

You guys were already in a van - all you needed was Scooby and Shaggy  :ihih: :devildevil:

I was pretty annoyed turning 18, since I was old enough to vote and die for my country but still not able to buy a beer (in KY).

I bet she'll never forget it.

Given the circumstances, that will be difficult - but it sounds like you guys made the most of it.

I was pretty annoyed turning 18, since I was old enough to vote and die for my country but still not able to [legally] buy a beer (in KY).

I had to add a word to part of your post. I suspect that it's more accurate this way!?

Believe it or not, I never tried any form of alcohol until about three months after I turned 18.

Happy belated, Tricia! You were tiny when I first met you, your sister and your dad in Tuolumne Meadows and I hope I'm still around when you're old enough to become president!

Give T a BIG HUG for us on her graduation day.

And thank you for the wonderful picture - it's going in a frame for display.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!  :guitar:   :yesnod: :arf:

Let's all keep our fingers crossed for her for the University of Oregon in September. They're planning on live classes, with precautions and possible adjustments.

We are so, so hopeful that this works out and that she and all the students and staff stay healthy (that part of Oregon has really low COVID rates, at least right now). I can't say enough about what a blow it will be if she can't go off to college.

Ya the whole in school vs remote debate is such a hard one. Having people travel from all over the USA to one place (school) in huge numbers seems like such a bad idea, but for her sake I REALLY hope they find a way to do it safely and she can have some form of a "normal" first year of college. Fingers crossed

The school did a good job, given the little flexibility they had to work things. The "drive-by" graduation seemed upbeat:

And, for the finale... the Summerville class of 2020 is the only graduating class in the history of the school that has been allowed to decorate its mortar board caps (Tricia decorated hers in a Lord of the Rings theme with the words "I think I'm quite ready for another adventure"):
