Paging Gavin - Found A Bird Leg Band
« on: January 01, 2020, 12:00:36 PM »
While Brad, Mr. Mud, and I were gathering details on the second pitch of "Feather Canyon" on December 30th, I found a blue leg band with the marking BR4 on the side and 3 in another location in the dirt.  Is this leg band of importance for your work?

No, the leg band is not of importance for my work, but thanks for checking - it doesn't represent any of the falcons we have banded over the years. My guess is that the band is from an escaped racing pigeon that was killed and eaten by the resident peregrine falcon pair in the Tuff Dome / H & L Dome / Flakes area. If you want to send me a photo of the band - or give a few more details on size - I can try to confirm, but a band from a pigeon is my strong suspicion.

While we are on the subject, do any of you climbers wear ankle bracelets or GPS location monitoring bracelets?

You are probably right that it is from a pigeon.  The band diameter is only 5/16", which I think would be too small for for the typical bird of prey.
