Bi-Color or Middle marked rope
« on: February 12, 2020, 05:01:28 PM »
What say you for preference?

YOu have taken care of your morning resolution and are now at the start of the climb.

Which type of rope do you prefer?

Solid? With a Sharpie marked middle point?
Bi-Color

I love our bi-pattern ropes - so easy to see the middle mark!

I miss the days of coloring your mid mark with a Sharpie or tape.

Squiddo preferred tape.

I would prefer if all of my ropes were bi-color... But they are generally a lot more expensive, so I default to middle marked ropes, with occasional Sharpie use for renewing the middle mark.

Yeah Squiddo was always funny...hold on I need to re-tape the middle mark!

Now he says I’m not climbing with you unless your rope is a bi-color.

Times have changed!

Disregarding finance, I'd like my next rope to be bicolor.

No confusion as to the middle.

All my ropes have had middle markers when I bought them.

None of my ropes boast middle markers anymore.

No bi-color for me.  Ropes that get used get dirty.  Colors fade anyway and often the bi in bi-color is so close it’s hard to decipher the middle.  Remark the center with a black marker and you’re ready to go again without the extra expense for a fancy weave rope.  Not to mention for those of us who are color blind bi-color ropes are a challenge.

Yeah those color blind folks can’t see the color change.

Is anyone going to state the obvious (as Kat did) and say bi-pattern?

Nearly all ropes are bi-color (or more).

I won't buy another bi-pattern after the trick Noal showed me   :ihih:

It is nice to have a halfway mark especially when doing multiple back to back rappels.  I always end up with ropes without one because they are cheaper.

So, if you buy a black rope, everything between the ends is the middle.
Causing trouble when not climbing.

There he goes again complicating matters.

White athletic tape on the middle.

Or that white plastic tool dip stuff.

Speaking of black ropes.....

We were I am REI, a guy asks for a top rope.
The DEI expert recommends a static black rope.

Sigh!!’

I’ve started using the maxim Platinum 9.8 mm rope. It is way better than a bi color in my opinion.  The rope color is solid blue but starting six meters from the end two thread bundles turn red, at five meters four thread bundles are red, four meters from the end six bundles turn red until the rope is almost pure red at the end. The same applies to the middle two meters of the rope but with green. This provides an incredible visual of where you are on the rope. This is also the first rope where the sheath is physically woven into the core. This provides extra durability and seems to make it run like a much thinner rope.  I’ve had mine for almost a year and a half and it still looks and feels like its brand new despite countless pitches in red rocks, Yosemite, J tree, the pinnacles and three months sport climbing in Europe. In my mind this is the new standard for ropes. This is seriously the best rope ever.

I never compromise on safety gear, which helps keep the irrational fears at bay. New Harness and rope every two years for me.

I'm not quite up to Squidoo standards and will never use Joes gear. I believe this rope will will last two-three times longer than anything I've had since a supersafe, which is two fat for me.

and for a cool middle mark if your rope doesn't have one, i use dental floss woven through the sheath bundles with a good amount extra hanging out so you can see it from a mile away and feel it in the dark.

I'll donate $40.00 to the Access Fund if anyone on this site (who's last name isn't Cook) can explain how this reference ties to Adam's post. Two conditions though: NO USING THE INTERNET, AND NO ASKING THE COOKS. Use the internet if you want, or talk to J.C., but you're then disqualified. Anyone who cheats? their rope will break on their next lead fall  :P
