And carry that water while it is treating.

Nah. I can carry no to half a liter of water, treat it when I get to it and drink it then.

The older I get, the less I care to carry.

The more water and stuff you carry the slower you are and the longer it takes to get to more water.

For backpacking I like the normal size sawyer squeeze filter.  Carry one large smart water bottle of "dirty" and one quart sized clean drinking water bottle.Filter enough to fill the clean bottle and the rest is backup until you get to next source. filtering water takes time.

 Riding a bike I can see how the steripen could come in handy. Smart water bottle might bounce off the bike somewhere roll down hill etc. 

I had a climbing partner once that had the steripen.  My only dislike was that sometimes in the sun it was hard to see the lights on it.

@ Noal,   made me laugh.

I am trying to work out a solution for longer gravel type rides around here.  I have a normal sized sawyer but it is mostly plugged and the bag sprung a leak.  There on many of the rides it is easy to find clear running water in which case I think a steripen could work.   I have found sometimes when the water is shallow it can be difficult to fill the sawyer bag.  I am bouncing between a filter, steripen and a sawyer bag type solution. 

Iodine takes 4 hours to kill crypto.

Riding the bike around here the last month or so I have been thinking of carrying the filter with me but I do not like using the bag with the Sawyer. I usually just use a water or soda bottle with the same thread.  Most of the water at parks has been turned off and for awhile there some of the small stores were closed.

Yesterday when I got inside of Portola Redwoods they left all the water on which was awesome.  Noted that for upcoming hot days.

In any activity outdoors I have grown to realize that hydration and fuel are the key to going all day.  I'm sure everybody has a story about the time when you ran out of water.

 Another big mistake eating the wrong kinds of food.  I mailed myself a big bag of jellybeans in a resupply once..........

I keep mine in individual compartments in a hermetically sealed, temperature and humidity controlled vault.

I filter the water from my sewer drain and then record the results in a password protected spreadsheet.

My last two longer rides I got fairly dehydrated.  During the last ride I passed one water source thinking I would hit another and did not until well after I had spots in front of my eyes and everything was fuzzy.  That was thanks to a long, steep and sun exposed hill climb.  I had a doctor tell me this is really bad and should be avoided.  I did not have the heart to tell him just how many hours of my life had been spent with fuzzed out eyes.  I finally found water coming out of a road cut and drank about 30 oz of water.  My temps finally came down and my eyes cleared up.  The Sawyer leaked and was quite difficult to push water through.  That is what made me think of the Steripen.  At least with the Steripen I could just sit there and veg while it did its magic. 

I agree keeping hydrated and eating the right food is essential.  Took me a bit to recover from that beating.  When I was younger it seemed like I could power through the dehydration and lack of food easier.  Now it seems to really kick my ass.

That's the nice thing about the Steri-Pen. You can be drinking safe water within two or three minutes of arriving at the source.

Just make sure that you don't run out of batteries (I always have a second set with my pen).

It’s about key essentials...toilet paper, almond joys.
I can blather on and on about expedition foods.

I am lazy and have an mat ceramic filter.

Funny note, 2yrs ago I was mtn biking on skyline with zero water.I came down the trail near the mid pen camp near alpine road. There was a water source saved!!!...I drank a bunch and refilled...dodged a bullet!

Next year while riding the same trail, there was now a sign above the water source....non potable.
Damn, it sure tasted good.

This has happened to me too. I screwed the filter down really tight to a bottle and dislodged this plastic washer in the Sawyer. Water was leaking out the sides etc. 

Damn, it sure tasted good.
 

The water around Black Mountain/Longridge is good.  The guy at the chestnut farm told me his well water has won awards for best tasting in U.S.  (never knew there were water tasting events)

Found a spring once above horseshoe lake at skyline open space that has really good water.

I use a modified sippy cup that I equipped with a homemade cartridge filled with a mixture of black and green moss, orange lichen and bentonite that I mine from a secret spot at an unmentionable place.
