Chopper circling High Peaks…
« on: January 09, 2024, 04:36:57 PM »
Yesterday around sunset from the west side parking lot I saw a helicopter circling the High Peaks.  It would hover surprisingly low and it seemed from my perspective at least to get pretty close to the rock. It would do this, then circle around and repeat the process. A few minutes later as darkness was approaching it left. There was also a fire truck and ambulance in the parking lot, they were both empty so I guess the occupants were all headed up the trail.  When I left another fire truck with lights flashing was coming up the west entrance road.

Does anyone know what happened?  Climbing accident?  Hiker mishap?  Just curious.  Hope whatever happened to whomever that they are ok.

It seems no one knows. Gavin might.  On a different subject what did you climb?  Mondays or Tuesdays must be dreamy climbing days.

Yes Mondays are great!  I’m in the minority in that I look forward to Mondays!  I have to work for a Monday is one of the days I always have off from work. The parking lot only had 2 or 3 cars when we arrived  and there have been many times it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. I’ve only been to pinns a handful of times on the weekend & none since it changed from monument to park status.  Since my partner and I like to seek out the backcountry stuff it probably wouldn’t matter except for the parking hassle. We drive down from SF and I don’t think either of us would be willing to get up early enough to guarantee a spot on the weekends.

As far as what we did. We went out to the Stronghold, wanted to enjoy that area before the closures. Joy of Hooking was our first foray into aiding. It was a ton of fun, however, we were both pretty worked as it was something new and our efficiency was more than likely subpar.  That 5.7 that starts after Joy of Hooking was really nice, except being a little spent made it seem harder than it probably is.

A shoutout to all those that developed that area, it’s one of our new favorite places!

Your thread title reminded me of one of my favorite old movie quotes circa 1986 (Stand By Me).

"Chopper...sic balls!"
One wheel shy of "normal"

Russ - nice; glad you enjoyed being out there! I was doing some raptor monitoring, surveying the Crowley / Stronghold area on Monday, and saw you guys hiking on the upper tier and checking out some of our routes.

And I'm not sure about the helicopter - I'll have to ask the law enforcement rangers. Likely a visitor accident if there was a helicopter as well as ambulance and Cal Fire responding.

Gavin thanks for chiming in.  I was just curious, hopefully it was nothing too serious.  Yeah we were checking out the climbs up there.  We didn’t get on Hidden Treasure, it sounds like a lot of fun. Definitely on the list for next season after the closures lift & the weather cools!
