Bob, I think that the accident wasn't on Sunday, July 6th, it was several months ago (March of this year or so?). That's an old news story.
Dan, the safety volunteer on the West Side was one of the first people on the scene. As best as he could determine, this was a group of three, all young and very inexperienced (they'd been out once with an experienced climber and had decided to try climbing by themselves).
The leader, a young man, was on Lichen to Lead when he fell. For some reason, he wasn't caught by the belayer. It seems that he either didn't clip something correctly or that the belayer failed to hold the fall properly (their level of inexperience combined with the fact that Dan isn't a climber led to some very uncertain ideas about what exactly had happened). it sounded like he fell and then tumbled, with multiple impacts. He ended up at the base of the climb from 80 feet up.
Lots of lacerations and several broken bones (I don't recall which ones). All of the climbers were members of the U.S. Army who were attending one of the schools in Monterey. The young man who got hurt was treated for a week and then was able to go home to recover (not sure where home was for him).
