Don't worry, I ride up that way a lot. Maybe we can ride up Old La Honda one of these days. =)
After I get my roadie fixed anyway... I had to get a new bottom bracket, which hopefully will be installed later this week.
It might just be the shape of the frame that makes it look so small. It's really all about how comfortable you are on the bike. My bikes are 58 and 59 cm, and even that 59 seems a tad small (though the 58 seems a bit big, but it is a different brand). My next bike will be custom, so I'll have to measure that when it comes through...

As far as crankarm length goes, there isn't much of an advantage in going with longer cranks on a multi-geared bike. In fact, if they are too long, you are probably going to have knee problems (this is due to the longer cranks forcing your knees up higher). On the other hand, there doesn't seem to be a problem going for shorter cranks. I've been riding 175s for a long time, yet when I ordered my new group, I got 172.5s (I'm 6')" with a 32 1/8 inseam). That should help me spin just a bit faster, yet still have leverage in the rare case where I am maxing out my 34-26 low gear. My dad rides 170s and says they seem about perfect for him (he's 5'9").
If you want a "fun" long ride, go for the Shasta Summit Century; a nice 129 miler with more climbing than the Death Ride. I plan on doing both of those this year, so I will judge which is tougher. =)
