It's twins! :-)
« on: March 15, 2007, 08:54:42 PM »
And identical too! They just arrived home today.

We are planning to go for a ride (my first one) from La Honda to Pescadero for a slice of Olallieberry pie at Duarte's.  I heard there is a world famous bakery there too.  Everyone is invited to join us on the ride. I'll be slow.  But if you are strong, depending on the turnout, there might be fast riders to team up with you.

We'll leave La Honda Post Office (8865 LA Honda RD, La Honda, CA 94020) at 9:30 AM.  Meet us there or at our home (call 650-747-1747 to get address) prior to 9:15. No cell reception here.

What a beauty!
Inch by inch, I will get there.

Names, length, weight, etc? Induced or natural? Did you have an epidural? Those babies look like they hurt.

Oh, you guys are terrible!  Here is the information:

DOB: March 15, 2007

Thelma: size 49, 19.9 lbs including everything.

Louise: size 56, 19.0 lbs without peddles installed.

(Names are subject to change because I have yet to consult with my husband who is out fishing today.) It did hurt when I emptied my pocket for them but I look forward to many years of joy they will bring to us.

Tease me all your want, but are you coming for the ride or not?

I'll have to ride with you guys some other time. My roadie needs a new bottom bracket... So I'm riding my single speed until I get that replaced...

My new bike should be around in another 2+ months, then I can really leave everyone in the dust... I've got most of the components now, just waiting for the frame.  :)

You can probably still leave me in the dust even with your single speed.

It will be my second bike ride. I just did my first one (a short ride) this morning just to practice clipping and unclipping.  My biggest concern about tomorrow's ride is not my speed, but not crash. I don't want a single scratch in my new baby.

While taking a break when we got back to Pescadero the second time, we met a Santa Cruz group doing a century (edit: Erik said there were doing a 130 mile brevet). They are required to get receipts at each stop.  It was very inspiring to hear a man in his late 50's with a spare tire hanging on his waist and man boobs (in Erik's words) talk about his 7 double centuries last year.  Wow!

No doubt...

My dad is doing his first century today. He should be done in the next couple of hours. I'm only doing about 30 miles today; just taking it easy and hanging  out at Mission Coffee Roasters in Fremont. That 55 miler after dark on Friday kicked my ass. Well, that and the Guinness yesterday.  :D

It's amazing the kind of people you see at a double. I rode for a while with a guy who was in his late 70s (during the Eastern Sierra Double). He was keeping up a damned good pace. It's just inspiring to see that there are people out there still cranking hard at that age.

Seven doubles would make for a pretty damned good year. I'm only aiming for four or five... First up will be the Eastern Sierra on June 2. Or maybe I should go for the Diablo one first... We'll see.

Another random question. What component group is on those bikes? And who sized Mr Mud on that bike? It looks like one of those clown bikes under him...

Shimano 105 component group.  The bike shop "GoRide" sized us.  The fit may not be perfect and I may actually go with an even shorter stem.  The bike currently has a 110.  The Frame is a 56 which is what most everyone says I should ride.  I am just learning this part of cycling.  Perhaps if you are in this neck of the woods someday you can swing by and we can ride and you can give us some tips.

On another note I have been doing a a bit of reading lately about longer (proportional) crank arms.  I had them put 175 on my bike and would really like to try 180's someday.  What do you think about longer crank arms?

Four or Five Doubles would be awesome.  You get the coveted California Triple Crown.  I am thinking next year for the Diablo.  Back in the Day you had to do the three hardest in one year to get the Triple Crown, now I think you only have to do Three Doubles.

Tell your Dad, Congrats.

Don't worry, I ride up that way a lot. Maybe we can ride up Old La Honda one of these days. =)

After I get my roadie fixed anyway... I had to get a new bottom bracket, which hopefully will be installed later this week.

It might just be the shape  of the frame that makes it look so small. It's really all about how comfortable you are on the bike. My bikes are 58 and 59 cm, and even that 59 seems a tad small (though the 58 seems a bit big, but it is a different brand). My next bike will be custom, so I'll have to measure that when it comes through... :)

As far as crankarm length goes, there isn't much of an advantage in going with longer cranks on a multi-geared bike. In fact, if they are too long, you are probably going to have knee problems (this is due to the longer cranks forcing your knees up higher). On the other hand, there doesn't seem to be a problem going for shorter cranks. I've been riding 175s for a long time, yet when I ordered my new group, I got 172.5s (I'm 6')" with a 32 1/8 inseam). That should help me spin just a bit faster, yet still have leverage in the rare case where I am maxing out my 34-26 low gear. My dad rides 170s and says they seem about perfect for him (he's 5'9").

If you want a "fun" long ride, go for the Shasta Summit Century; a nice 129 miler with more climbing than the Death Ride. I plan on doing both of those this year, so I will judge which is tougher. =)

I made it from Santa Cruz to Atascadero in about 8+ hours. I think that is 150 miles or so.

Of course, I was worn out after riding to Eureka to Santa Cruz in the previous 4 days. :)

An update on my dad's century...

He made it to 100.7 miles, and swears he could have ridden another 700 yards.  :D

Did a short ride today: Alpine Road between Pescadero Road and Skyline. The scenery was great and the traffic was very light. However, the quality of the road surface left much to be desired (Pescadero Road seems a lot better).  Not used to going down hill on cracked surface yet. I was braking way too much.  Wonder if other popular riding routes such as Old La Honda, Tunitas, etc. are better.

Old La Honda is a pretty nice road. It's still kind of cracked up, and is way too narrow and winding to make for a nice descent. But the climb is fun.  :D

Maybe I'll head up that way in the morning...

Yesterday, I found myself thinking wish I only needed to do the ascent part and then would be picked up by a truck at the summit.  But then, I'll never get better at descent.

Hey, you are welcome to stop by. (650-747-1747)

I was planning to go for another ride today, but the roads seem to be too wet for my liking. Will see how it is later in the day.
