Broke personal record today on Old La Honda
« on: May 21, 2007, 08:49:40 PM »
Yeah... ;D

Shortly after I got on the road from work, my front shifter refused to get out of the granny gear.  Eventually got it working again, but I cruised quite a bit. I guess that's why I felt pretty fresh when I got to OLH.  Was able to shave about 2 minutes off of my previous record.  Being able to peddle out of saddle made a HUGE difference although my peddling is still far from being smooth. Still lots of room for improvement.
Inch by inch, I will get there.

Mine was 26:00... I need to get up there more often so I can shave more time off of it.  :)

24:30. That's a nice looking time. Me like it.

Okay, I'm inspired. I should get back on my bike again. No more excuses. Will start next week.

No no no; start today! Don't wait!

I'm trying to get in at least two major climbs in per week these days, just to keep my legs going for the hills. Call it training for the Death Ride...  :)

Also, I want to climb every hill in the area, so any suggestions for new ones are welcome.

If you are ever in the East Bay / Vacaville area, Winters- Cantelow Loop is a classic ride with a classic hill.  Most people start in Winters down the frontage road to the South, West across the English Hills (good warmups) then up over Cantelow, North on Pleasant's Valley to Putah Creek Rd then East for a quick return to Winters.  IMO, one of the best rides around.  Check out the map/profile here (not my data):

Winters - Cantelow Loop

I did it today and averaged 20.1 mph, so I was pretty psyched given that there is a good amount of climbing and there was also a decent 15 mph wind blowing.

Probably my most favorite ride in all of Northern California that I have done so far is the Silverado Trail Loop (Napa to Calistoga).  Nothing but wide shoulders, good pavement, and vineyards/wineries the whole way.  Usually a light breeze, but the area has its own microclimate.  Sometimes it is smoking hot in Vacaville and I'll drive out there and there will be a cool breeze and a light marine layer.  Perfect riding weather! (also, not my data)

I figured that I should bump this thread to the top of the heap; so I went out and crushed OLH after work.  :)

Today's time was 23:22, and I can't remember the last time my quads were burning from any sort of effort. It actually felt good dry heaving at the top while trying to talk to a couple of other riders. But really, I think I can knock a few more minutes off the time if I do it without the messenger bag and perhaps a shorter warmup...

I also broke my PR ... at the slower end though. 35:56.  On my mountain bike.  It didn't feel slow when I did it. I was singing a silly circuit song as taught by our MTB skills camp instructor to stay relaxed.

I also want to go back to Highway 9 and see if I can crush my time there... I haven't been up it since February. I need to aim for the 40 minute mark on that one, since my best time is 41:27.  :)

For the record, the last time I did OLH (June 16); my time was much slower... Just over 32 minutes. Of course, I had just done Kings Mountain and had no rest or food between the two climbs.  ;)

Time to resurrect the dead topic...

I crushed my PR on Old La Honda yesterday. The total distance I rode yesterday was 104 miles, and I topped out on OLH at 28. My time for the climb was 22:35.   :)

I felt great on the climb, and happened to start up just behind a racer-type who was doing interval training on the hill. He must have done it in 22:00, but I was able to hang onto him for most of the climb...

Next time I will stepped the gearing up one notch and see what I can do with that.

Felt pretty good today first time got on a real road ride after a summer of mountain biking. 23:21 by Mud and 23:24 by worm. New PRs!  :D  It was a very nice feeling to pass at least a dozen riders on OLH.  First thing I did after getting home was I searched for F'ueco's PR -- 22:35! Dang, we still had to shave almost a minute off! Of course by then, who knows where F'ueco will be. Oh, you are killing us.

P.S. New PRs on West Alpine for us too.  Wow, the mountain biking rides must have helped a lot. Middle chain ring whole day!

Nice work!

I need to get up there again soon... It's been almost two months since I last climbed OLH. And I took it somewhat easy that day and only got in around 24:00. Yesterday I rode to the Oakland Coliseum and back to watch the Earthquakes play. 69 miles on a fixie is quite the workout...  :)
