Mama is always right -- do not run before you can walk
« on: June 01, 2007, 11:10:44 AM »
Went for a very short training ride at Arastradero yesterday after work.  Was planning to ride with the Mere Mortals group there, but I didn't make it there until almost an hour after their meeting time. Never saw them, so I rode on my own.  On my way back to the car, I let myself go a little faster than usual on the gently downhill fire road. Feeling good, I even did some small hops here and there.  But I didn't land right after the last hop and the bike started to wobble. I must have panicked and braked, which I can't recall clearly.  But my bike washed out and I went with it.  There were bruises and scrapes all over, but the left elbow was hit the worst because I was wearing short sleeves.  Mr Mud was working late, so I cleaned myself up and wrapped the elbow with gauze.  Mr Mud didn't get to see the wound until time to go to bed. But that was the end of my going-to-bed attempt because he insisted we needed to go to a hospital. *sigh* didn't get back home until 4am.  The doctor cleaned some little rocks out that I left stashed in that hole and stitched it up.  I know it's hard to believe for you crazy kids on the forum, those were the first stitches ever in my life! Did I tell you I was a couch potato before?  :D

The doctor said I could ride again right away. But my arm is still pretty sore right now. I might give my bike a couple days of rest. Back to my walking now.

Inch by inch, I will get there.

Mudworm can under state some things a bit.  There was a dime sized hole in her skin.  All the derma was gone and I could see a patch of fat/muslce.  She wanted me to just lift up the skin to "finish" cleaning the junk out that was under the skin layer.  That for me, is a job for a doctor.  THe doctor ended up enlarging the hole to about the size of a quarter to get all the rocks out.  When I got her to tell the doctor all the stuff she did, he rolled his chair back about two feet, leaned back and just stared at her.  After that, he asked if she had insurance.  Then he asked if she wanted suture it herself?

I did a similar thing in High School, decided to play doctor and ended up with blood poisoning.  So this time I was not about to mess around.  I shared with mudworm some advice a doctor gave me once after trying to take care of stuff on my own instead of seeing a doctor.  "There are no hero's here, just dead people".

Mudworm, It is ok to try and run, but you should try running when you have a riding partner with you.   I tend to take it easy when I am by myself and I will open it up when I am riding with people.  Sorry to hear that you biffed it and congrad for getting you 1st set of stitches.  I sure there are more to come.  LOL.  Rest up for the downieville.

Doh... :-[  Hate those crash and burns.....

Glad that Mr Mud took you in, you never know what could be in there with a big spill like that.  Good thing your alright and it is a matter of just healing up.  I will second what Delbomber says, always take it a bit eaiser when your by yourself.  I had a spill about 4 years ago that left me with no feeling on my right side and had to be carried out.

Rest up and hope to see you hit the trails again soon..  :)
