Honest Review of the NEW Guidebook
« on: November 01, 2007, 05:29:19 PM »
Okay, I was able to thumb through the new guidebook.

A few notes from my recollection:
It's awsome!
The pictures are nice (Mr Mud in a tie-dye is priceless).
The topos are clear, and descriptive. Unlike the purple book.
Cool new routes are in the book like the Machete Arch, Penguin Handshake.

It will be worth the wait.

Excellent job!  A lot to like here.  Will be great fun studying it in detail.  Thanks for all your efforts putting it together.

Who is going to announce the new guidebook on RC.com & Supertopo?

Someone has to spread the word...

Yeeeeaaaah, thanks to Jim's home delivery, we got our three copies :D -- one for before washing our hands, one for after, and one for Mr Mud's friend Dave Wood.

Mr Mud has seen the new guidebook when Brad brought his own first copy down and I saw it last weekend at F4's place, but it ain't the same as reading it at home, in my couch, undisturbed.

1) The book only weighs 1 lb 11.375 oz (778g).  So, it's light!
2) The route numbers go up to 880.  Brad, you'd done 749 routes (as of Oct 23) in good style, right? That's about 85.11%. I wonder if any author of other guidebooks (the complete ones, not the selects like Supertopos) can beat that.
3) The maps and topos are top notch! Even the trees in the topos are leaning in a meaningful way.
4) Introduction makes an excellent read, esp. to an armchair climber like me.

Now, Brad, how do you want to collect/maintain/publish your errata? I've found some misinformation that I want to report.  Notice that I did not say "mistake" because F4 once said to me, "To say the guidebook made a mistake would be to say Brad made a mistake and he never does that. "
Inch by inch, I will get there.

Worm: Um... I've done more than that now. Silly me, I like the place.

As to corrections, Yesterday I prepared four "official" corrections" of typos that are significant enough to have meaning (to me this threshhold occurs if a typo might cause someone to get confused). Brooks and Clint have agreed to carry a section of "official" corrections, and I'm hoping you will too. Plenty of room for other information, corrections, clarifications, and comments by others too, but a section for actual changes to what was published. If this is OK, let me know. And if you have suggestions for inclusion get them to me.

I'm not mud; I'm worm, because I believe in "Inch by inch, I will get there."

Brad, I've replied your email about my corrections. I'm sure Admin will be happy to create a section dedicated to errata and other discussions/information on the guidebook. If we put some pressure on Admin, maybe it will materialize by end of the year.

Worm, noted and edited. Also, including Appendix "A" there are 894 routes in the book.

I'll email you the corrections I've noted. One example: on page 318, on the middle right of the topo it says "150 to Icarus...." The route referenced should be Daedalus. There was some confusion about which Denny/Colliver route was which. Turns out I had them backward and I fixed it late in the game. Got it almost everywhere (index, appendices, text) but missed the change that needed to be done here, 8 or so pages before the route is listed.

So, Factor's full of it. I make mistakes, lots of them. And those of you who contributed by editing/ reviewing know it too! (You, Mudworm, how many changes did your editing lead to?)

It's current. When are you going to finish your routes there? Plus you'd have to get Munge to get over his "Grotto phobia" so he'd put it on his site.

When the price of gas goes down...

Most likely in December when Cliff gets a free weekend.
