Recomendations for the Family Guy
« on: December 14, 2007, 09:07:49 AM »
Just got the new guide last night and spent some time going through it.  I have not been to the Pinnacles in years.  What are some recommendations of uncrowded areas that are kid friendly and have a variety of climbs.  We don't mind hiking a bit to get away from people.  I was thinking the High Peaks but any suggestions would help.
 Thanks Jeff
PS  Is that a mullet Mr Mud?

I'm bring my son to Pinns tomorrow, and I was wondering about climbs that are decently warm (good sun exposure). The high tomorrow is supposed to be about 60F.

Twinkletoes Traverse on Machete Ridge might be good. but does it get any sun?

What about the regular Route on the Monolith?

Any other good ideas out there for 5.7-5.8 routes that wont be too cold?

Thanks in advance!

P.S. Can I get the new guide at the East Side park entrance?

Steve

High Peaks can be a lot of fun for kids. Stairs and railings and condors and you get way up there.

Along the way from the East Side is the Carousel, The Unmentionable and Photographer's delight. Possibly good for kids.

Mono East Side gets sun in the morning, but Disco wall get's sun earlier.

Teaching rock is good as are the Sisters.  Gerdies gets a fair amount of sun and has a half dozen TR's that are 5.7 - 5.9.
Lions Head is a cool 5.4 but a bit of a hike.  Triple Decker is out there and at 5.8 is some what stiff but is a double over lap with a summit.  Also out there is the Outcast.  The rock on the Outcast is not stellar and the routes are a bit old school.
There is The Flatiron and Salathe Sliver and all that jazz for short casual stuff with early sun.
Machete Regular is a very good choice however the far end (decent) will most likely get cold.  Twinkle Toes and that stuff will be in the sun in the afternoon.  The Flumes gets early sun.
Condors, Longs, Burgundy, Sponge, Tuff, Byrnum's is all cool with good views.

The High Peaks will most likely be windy so bring a hat and jacket.

Stared at the Flumes all day last weekend and they didn't get much sun.

Machete did get sun, but can be chilly if the wind picks up.

Mr Mud hits it on the nail with the HP climbs to do.

Munge has a good point about Condor crags. My fondest memory of the Pinns is the condor crag part of the trail.

Hey Jeff, give me a jingle when you are planning to head down there.
I'm not worthy.

"The Flumes gets early sun."

This is true, but it doesn't get sun for long.  Get in there knock out the classics and move out.

If the stream is dry, Passion Play and the Cochran route left of it, are really good options for kids. Jon created the one for his kids, actually several of his routes are that way, and I think his eldest even helped establish one of them.
