Chilled to the bone
« on: December 25, 2007, 10:31:44 PM »
I don't remember ever being so cold.  It was a sunny day, so we left the house without much warm gear. Neither of us owns arm&leg warmers. Mr Mud wore his cycling shorts and 3/4 fingered gloves, and I was slightly better equipped because I had my knickers and full fingered gloves on.  When we were moving on Skyline from Alpine towards 84, we went through a few cold sinks. I got so cold that my body froze up. I couldn't get my left foot to unclip when I stopped, which resulted in a crash at zero speed. The cold got even worse when we went down 84. It took me almost half of Old La Honda just to warm up enough that I could unclench my jaws. But that warmth did not last long and the ride home ended with a long descent.  Shivered for a long time after we arrived home.
Inch by inch, I will get there.

Nice! It was chilly up there yesterday for sure...

I once did Highway 9 in sub-30 degree temperatures. That was brutal even though I was "prepared" for it...  :D

I can see that. To me, it was a learned appreciation. I'd been cold before, but was always able to do something like stumping my feet or wrapping my arms around my torso.  What's brutal on a bike while cruising downhill is you, at least I, can't do anything but maintain one position for a long time.

Nah - I "bitch-n-moaned" (Mr Mud's word) on the approach to the backside of Resurrection Wall.

BTW, Munge, I received an email from Joc out of blue even though I've never met her. It was because of something you said to her. Do you know what that is?  :D

It was definitely cold.  I took a warm shower right after we got home.  The skin on my thighs was warm afterward but deep inside my thighs still felt cold.  Mudworm heckled me until I went outside and worked in the garden for an hour.

Yeah, it got you warm, didn't it?  Better than sitting in the couch reading about what had happened in the sports world during the past three hours we were out. ::)

Joc is good peeps. I was trying to get them (Sean and Joc) to go up to Castle with Evan R, Uber, Chriz and myself. Haven't seen them in forever. Anyways, Joc loves to ride bikes- tho mostly mtn bike I believe. Was figuring Mr Mud will be too old to ride a bike soon and will have to stick to Pinnacles, so you'll need a new riding cohort.  ;)

Right. When she told you that she could not go climbing at Castle because she would be mtn biking instead, you said "I fear we have lost both you and mudworm to biking."  :D

Nah, you can never get too old to ride a bike. On the other hand, one might get too old to climb at Pinnacles though.

It's all about moderation. Splitting the time between biking and climbing. That way, when I suck at both....I have an excuse to lean back on.  ::)

Very wise. Very wise.

I split time between lots to things, so I'm pretty safe with where my meager climbing ability lies.

some of you good folk may be interested in a road ride I would like to repeat.  bike to the Pinnacles (east side) from soquel area through watsonville, rural roads, preferably on a weekend day in the spring (less traffic, leave early, warmer, longer days).  climbing gear is transported by non-riders and is waiting in the parking lot in a vehicle with roof bike racks (mine can accommodate 2-4 bikes depending on passenger comfort).  vehicle also contains cooler with beer.  climb, drive back.
did it one time, had a blast.  arrived at the east side between 11-12.  would like to repeat when the weather warms up.  the ride is chill, mostly rolling.
requires a little bit of coordination, but well worth it.

Just to make it clear, I'm interested in doing the riding, not really the transporting. Not sure about Mr Mud though.

that would be great!  since you folk are in la honda.  we could either meet off highway 1 or if you want to start with some extra down hill even 17 & summit to soquel/sj road.  then drive back through watsonville and hit up tepa for a meal you won't forget.
I'm so ready for longer days and warmer weather.

I have wanted to do this ride for quite some time.  May take some scouting to find a driver.
