I used to work with some guys that would go paddle the local creeks when ever they hit flood stage.  They almost got arrested one time trying to get up Stevens Canyon Road when it was closed do to flooding.

oh, Jakes descent was done in like mid 90s or so, just everyone doesn't think it's runnable. not that any sane person would.

I floated down it one time in an inner tube. It was my backyard and I couldn't drive so what else was I supposed to do;-) The worst was going over the spillway. Shit...don't know how I made it to 20.

Munge Dude,

I totally had forgotten that episode. And you have a picture. Was it his brother he did it with? REI days??

Squiddo, you actually went down the spillway.... :o

I need to dig up my picture of me ice climbing in Stevens Canyon.

Munge, watch out.
Who knows what was done in the 70's. There's always been a good redneck element in them parts.

Plus in the 70's you could actually swim in the creek (scary thought now days since I've learned about septic tanks and shit floating down creek). Errosion has filled that sucker to a trickle.

Squiddo, weren't folks shooting the spillway once?

Jake's was all above the reservoir, not below.

Yep...the spillway. Fun until you built up speed and hit terminal velocity at the steepest section. Only to splash into the deep pond below. I should have died.

I have pictures of Fisch and I running a Tyrolean above spillway with the raging water below.

I always wanted to shoot the spillway myself on a boggie board. It was the pool belows that worried me and what was in it.

Yep....put your old jeans on otherwise you're losing skin on the legs. The pool at the bottom was totally safe...full of old concrete and junk  ::)

Doubtful first descent, yet still something fun to do in the rain when you can't climb. Seriously- my knees got banged up after hitting so many rocks, and we probably only survived thanks to Rob, who scouted ahead for downed trees and such. An old friend Mike was with me and my brother in that cheap rubber raft. Nowhere near as crazy as the spillway... never tried that!

Although there was one time we snuck into the lower quarry below the reservoir and rappelled over some huge dirt cliff off small bushes. That was before I discovered climbing, of course. Yes, I too was a rappeller- including numerous Cupertino bridges, and Goat rock, all on webbing harnesses and hardware store rope. Did anyone else get into that before climbing?

Here's to reliving the past, until I can make it back out again with you guys- maybe next month. My wife had our baby last month (a girl, named Hazel), so I'm now a proud papa!

Hazel is a great name. Classic and classy. I think you're going to find that everything else you've done in life pales when compared to fatherhood. And yet, feeling that way now, I think back and am still surprised that the love and attachment wasn't intantaneous. It took months before I knew for sure that I was totally hooked and this new, little blob of protoplasm.

Congratulations.

Jake...classic yes that's EXACTLY how I got into climbing. Rapping off 1/4 nylon rope at Saint Andrews park. We're taking climbing up the dirt with axes and then rapping of small munge trees. Scary stuff indeed. 2 weeks later I was getting lessons at Goat Rock by an ASI rep.

Thanks everybody for the congrats.
We took Hazel to planet granite thursday for the first time- Boy, everybody climbs now! I didn't recognize more than two people- and the place was packed. More people than I've ever seen there. However, no Bratton! I guess he was slacking... We are looking forward to some outdoor climbing in a couple months with all of you again.

Here's a picture for you:

You didn't get the memo....Belmont is in & sunnyvale is not.

I've been climbing there lately with mudworm cuz Mr. Mud don't do the gym. I figure in another 2 weeks she'll be climbing circles around Mr. Mud.

Note to Mr. Mud..buy a new pair of shoes.
