biking the bay
« on: May 07, 2008, 07:58:07 PM »
shit loads of white cranes or herons
island full of big birds
2 families of canadian gooses 5 chicks each
13 miles mostly dirt road (underestimate likely but likely more since those roads out there twist and curl. thought I was going to get stuck with an out and back, but it eventually looped back to the wildlife refuge visitor center.

what a stellar spot to ride.

new estimate 14.5 - took an hour and 20.  is that a good pace or shitty pace?

It's the time in the saddle that counts. An hour+ of elavated exercise burns bonus calories.

I biked from Foster City to Sunnyvale today. 30 miles @ about 2hrs

Not bad... I know where you went, and the time sounds reasonable. That was the first dirt trail I rode on my singlespeed...

Munge you bring up a good point.

When I started riding last year, I noticed a heck of a lot of road kill on the side of the raod. Mainly squirrels, must have come up short.

Time in the saddle is good. I remember my legs were good for 100+ miles.
Heck I wasn't tired after 100, but oh my back and butt.

Plus, it'll help you build that nice callous ring down there. Ahhhh the joys of riding

Oh, you've changed your tone now that James is on the way.  Remember? It was not that long ago that you said time in the saddle is NOT good.  ::)  Watch out. James might want a little sister. Better stay off of that saddle...

Are you offering to help fit me?

True, the work is done for me. Mr. Mud needs all the help to keep his little guys flowing.

how do you fix the back one. not so bad if it's warm, but if it's cold, it can get sore fast.

Make sure your bike fits... If you got it from a decent shop, they should have done okay. Don't be afraid to go back and request a longer/shorter stem to make it fit better.

what does that mean?  "fits"  if I haven't ridden more than a handful of miles at a time for training purposes, I think it fits so far, and some soreness is expected yes?

Your legs should be sore, not your back (unless you're riding on really rough trails, then you might expect a little soreness there). Your ass may be a little sore, but should not be on fire after 10-15 miles...

ok so that's the only criteria for a fit, is that the back shouldn't be sore.  How do you objectify that measurement though?

Mungie...

Sorry I didn't get back to you regarding riding on Friday. I was in Paso Robles when I got your message. Another crazy long ride on Saturday.  ;)

And yes, I finished in a measly 15 hours and 55 minutes.

17.7 miles last night, new loop out into the bay following the slough to the power lines, then east to the tracks and back down.  saddle sore last night, but ok bum today.

and I think I'm underestimating my mileage with fewer way points on the curves.

what would be awesome is bike with a boat or windsurfing board, then windsurf back in.
