4th of July - Northstar at Tahoe downhill
« on: July 06, 2008, 10:30:55 AM »
On Friday, Kelly and I went up to Northstar at Tahoe and rode the lifts up to do the downhill runs. This was a big step for Kelly as she's still a bit timid about mountain biking. We stuck to the long, easy (green) fire road trail - rode it 4 times. Each time she got better and more comfortable riding down. Picking up more speed, letting off the brakes more. She even cleared the sections of gravel and babyheads without issue. She had a really good time and I think that picked her confidence up to get out on the trails some more.

On the last run, I peeled off to do an intermediate single track run. Pretty interesting with the hard tail as there were some wicked sections with rocks, roots, and burms. Not having much travel made it a bumpy ride and I bashed the crap out of my cranks and chain rings. I cleared almost everything - one spill as I came up hill on the single track, with bowling ball sized rocks embedded and a sharp turn. I cleared the front wheel over one of the rocks, but smacked the bottom bracket and basically went straight down into a near face plant. All in all though - it was a blast! Would love to run that again once I get the Blur built out.

We did some rafting down the Truckee river the next day. That was fun, too!

cool, sounds like fun and cheaper than a day of shuttles.

I don't know about cheaper. The lift cost was $39/per person. Not sure if there was a 1/2 day price. I think some other spots in Tahoe are cheaper, but Northstar seemed to have a lot of beginner trails for Kelly and was closer to where we were staying than Kirkwood.

Shuttles are $20 a person per ride.  So $40 for an entire day of riding isn't to bad.  Never thought I would do such a thing but I guess times change and it does sould like fun.

It is fun. Northstar has some sick downhill terrain. They have a couple of runs with insane technical features, like massive log ramps and teeter-totters, massive burms, big drops, crazy steeps and turns...And there is a ton of singletrack there.

...then you can grab some killer fish tacos and some Kona Brewing Co. Longboard Lagers at the Blue Wave.

my buddy's kid got to ride Mammoth Mtn for his bday, and apparently Mammoth charges $39 for ...

Just got back from Idaho and if you ever get to the Boise area try Tamarack near McCall,  25 dollars for all day.  I was with my family and watching kids so I did not get many runs in.  Good trails and friendly people.  US

At Northstar - that might be a possibility...the easy fire roads looked totally doable.

nah, not at the "resort" I meant in Tahoe. PLENTY to pedal up there.
