Anyone running lately?
« on: September 28, 2008, 09:28:39 AM »
So now that my ultramarthon cycling season is over, I need to start running again. My next training goal is an Ironman triathlon in March. So I need to go from having not run in the past year and a half  to marathon ready in a matter of 6 months...

Should be fun. I bought a new pair of running shoes yesterday, and am ready to start hitting the roads and trails. I'd like to get back to the level I was at in the fall of 2006 (45:38 10k) fairly quickly and then progress past that hopefully. I'm probably going to start off with 3 milers every other day for a couple of weeks and then build up from that.

Anyone have any advice? I'll still be riding 100-150 miles per week and swimming at least 2-3 days per week...

That's what I'm doing right now... Well, not drinking a beer; but you get the picture.  ;D

I just did my first run since Christmas 2006. Not bad considering that... 3 miles in 29:23, complete with plenty of walking.  :-\

I do not feel so bad now since that tends to be my pace when ever I start running.

Yeah, same here... It takes the body a couple of weeks to get used to running again. I'll be pulling 7:20 miles in no time...  ;)

Didn't I say I was going to go easy on myself?  ::)

I started running after work with my boss. When he turned around, I continued along the levees of the baylands around Sunnyvale. By the time I was done, I had done 7.2 miles... And I felt decent too.  :)

Nice Salad! I'll be hitting those kinds of miles in a couple of months!  :o

I did the weekly track workout with the Silicon Valley Triathlon Club this evening after work. I rode there too. I ended up with about 4.5 miles, including a mile for time. I ended up running a 6:31, which is my best time since high school (I ran a 6:09 mile on a dirt track as a junior).

I want that to be my 10k pace at this time next year!  ;)

I drove a mile in 6:31 yesterday.

mri results mostly negative.  small funkness on the miniscus and uber mild arthritis, but nothing conclusive.

time to get over it and quit whining.

I ran 10.3 miles last night for my first real run post-50.  It went very well, and I began working on REALLY concentrating on forefoot landing.  As a testament to my effectiveness, my calves are pretty frickin' sore, so I know I am doing it right.  Not too mention I cranked out sub-8 min/miles at what felt like a very low PE.  Of course I was chomping at the bit all week to start running again, so that may have had something to do with the low PE considering how excited I was to finally be back at out on the trail.

On a side note, another ultramarathoner was talking trash at my daughters cross country meet about making a shirt post-presumed Parent Race win that said she proposed to say, "My Mom can Beat Your Dad" T-shirts for her daughter.  It wasn't directed at me, though I won the parent race by over 2 mins last year, but it certainly provided plenty of incentive to incorporate fartlek training over the next few weeks.

Nov 9th, the shit goes down, I'll let you know how it goes :)

On a side note, I started my 9 week swim focus, 2 times a day 3/7 and 3 other days with single session, each Saturday with a 2.4 mile swim.  My arms are already sore and I am only 1 day into the 9 weeks hehe :)

I can feel myself slowly getting faster at this whole running thing. Last night, I did the track workout with the Silicon Valley Triathlon Club. I'm barely in the fast group now. It only gets better from here... I'm almost ready to start pushing my long runs out to 6+ miles on a regular basis. Should be fun!
