I'm now into the taper portion of my Ironman training (at least for the run, the taper period for the bike and swim will be shorter). I ran 14 miles last Sunday, and 8 miles this Sunday. I kept it rather short since I've been fighting off an overuse injury (slight tendon issue below my left knee). But I ran the entire distance, and felt not too bad... Of course, afterward my leg tightened up quite a bit. It's funny that nothing else hurts after a long run; just that damned tendon. I'll get it back to normal soon...  ;)

Which IM race are you doing, IM New Zealand or different one?  I got IM CDA on the agenda this year.  My plans are sub-10 with a Kona Slot.  What's your goal for time or is this your 1st and just going for the experience and finish?

I finished up my swim focus and feel really good about my stroke.   I'm in the middle of my run focus, so running 40-50 mpw, and going fairly easy on the swim/bike.  In a few weeks, I go high volume for the bike and intensity on the run. Then wrap the whole kit and caboodle up with an all in 6 week intensity focus before my 3 week taper.  I plan on being sub-175 lbs and made of rebar  >:D

It is IMNZ...

Indeed, this is my first Ironman. And my second triathlon. The first was the Santa Cruz Sentinel (Olympic distance). If all goes well, I should be looking at a time in the 10:30 to 12:00 range. The run will probably kick my butt...

Awesome man, good luck.  A little advice that took me 3 IMs to figure out:  Go for it!  If you have done the training, don't let the distance psych you out.  Break the race into each of the 3 disciplines and concentrate on giving your best effort in each.  The run is definitely the most challenging part of the race, but I just keep reminding yourself that this is what you trained for and in a few hours it will be over.  You don't want to be looking back thinking you left anything in the tank.  You want to KNOW you gave it everything.

The only part that has me worried is the transition from bike to run. At the Sentinel in '05, both of my legs cramped up within the first mile of the run. Hopefully all the training I've been doing will help with that! Only 23 days until race day...  :)

Yeah the next 3 weeks will blow by in a blur.  As you start to taper, you are going to start feeling like shit and will have all these little nagging what feels like an injury things.  Don't sweat it!  Totally normal. I swear during every taper I feel like I am falling apart.  I think it is your bodies way of actually repairing all those little trauma points now that you are resting and it just happens to make you be able to feel them again.

I have heard IM NZ is fantastic and I am way jealous!  It is one I would love to do some day.  If you don't mind me asking, what bike transport are you using to get your steed over there?  Are you doing it through a shop or self packaging and UPS'ing?

We are borrowing a 2-bike hardshell box from the Silicon Valley Tri Club and bring them with us on Air New Zealand. So we just have to pay for the one extra checked bag.

I'm off on a six mile run right now. Seems nice out there! I did a brief ocean swim this morning as well (my dad and I went over to Santa Cruz to check out the sale at the Patagonia outlet...).  :)

I've been averaging 40-50 mpw as part of my routine IM training volume leading to CDA.  My tempo runs are sub-7s now for 5-8 miles with my longer runs checking in high 7s/low 8s.  Right about where I want to be right now.  A few more weeks of volume, then I will switch into speedwork and it will be race time!

The little pop up countdown time I use is telling IM CDA is 95 days away...tick...tock...tick.....tock...

Good on ya! That's what I heard a lot of during IMNZ...

I'm hoping to squeeze Ironman Canada in next year, which means that I'll have to be in Penticton this year during the race to sign up for 2010. Should be fun! Need a cheering section?  :) Joan's done it twice and says that it's a great course...

ive completely given up.  everytime i went out i was utterly bored.  probably going to start back soon with some really mellow low mileage stuff for weight management and to build up a chill little base.  no races planned until maybe the helen klein in sacremento this fall (ie qualifier).

good on you guys for getting after it.

I just did my first post-Ironman run. I was only going to go 40 minutes, but I felt decent; so I ended running the Santa Cruz Track Club's 10K course (out and back mostly along West Cliff Drive). Good times! The run took 51:59 (I set my PR on the course at 45:38 a few years ago, so the time is fairly reasonable).

I'll be swimming in the ocean in less than an hour!  :)

two nights in row out walking with the gal and then leg lifts, sit ups, presses, curls, and dips with a bell behind the head. Not sure what's that called.

tomorrow a ride is in order since I didn't realize til just now that Salinas weather is looking ok for tomorrow.
