Suby Down!!
« on: February 01, 2009, 02:23:19 PM »
Yesterday, Kelly and I drove down to the Pinns. I dragged the poor girl up to the top of the Condor Gulch Trail and we did some climbs on some of the few formations that are open in the High Peaks (Dragonfly, Burgandy). Went back down the High Peaks trail. Drove home (stopping in LG for a burger). No issues. Great day.

Around noon today, I got in the Suby and started backing out the driveway when all of a sudden it sounded and felt like my axle fell off - horrible grinding noise and a sudden stop. I jumped out to make sure I didn't hit anything and looked under the car and all looked OK. But when I tried to get the car back into gear, it was like the gear box had a few new positions (but none of which were easy to get into - refrain from the obvious innuendos, you perverts!!!). I was able to putt my way back up the driveway, but it is clear she is phuckered! Really glad that didn't happen on 101 last night!!

Guess it is a good thing I just got my bonus...unfortunately, I had other plans for the money. The sad thing is that I was already planning on bringing her into the shop later this week for a tune-up and a new right low beam. What was probably going to be a $1K trip is now going to be like $5K!!! Aye carumba...

Bummers.  We will be done with the KOM in two weeks.  After that we will probably hit the Pins.  Will let you know if we are going in case you want to car pool.

Eighteen months ago mine lost it's transmission. Had it rebuilt and the clutch replaced while it was all opened up. Cost $4,400, but it's been great since. I thought it was because of how rough I've been with it. Now I'm wondering if there is a pattern here.

Still, awfully nice of it to wait until you were home!

how many miles on your relative subies Brad and Uber?

we're about to turn 100k, but it is an automatic. Chica takes immaculate care of the maintenance.

I turned 30k on my truck this weekend, and caught the flu and cut our trip short. this sucks.

And how many times have you taken it in for the scheduled service?

I blew a tranny in my old Ford because I missed a maintenance. Lesson learned.

Munge, it's all at Calistoga. You missed out. Nice lodging, good beer and fun sport climbing (approach sucks).

Gee, F4, you did get soft! Did I hear you right, that approach sucks? Granted, you were carrying a human being on your back, but still, a tiny little one.
Inch by inch, I will get there.

Just telling Munge like it is. A little farther than the Monolith, yet closer than the high peaks.

your sexual proclivities aside, I think the ford died because, well, it's a ford.

116K and I beat it to hell.

Still waiting to hear back. Brought it to Sunnyvale Foreign Car Service. The guy specializes in Subarus and knows his shit. He ran through a whole bunch of tests while I was there and called some other guys to confirm his suspicions. It looks like it is the center differential which is good b/c it means that the whole tranny doesn't need to be rebuilt, so unless he finds anything else, it will be under $2K instead of $4.5K. He's going to fix that annoying windshield/window noise I get when driving fast (he said that it is actually the rubber gaskets on the windows - common problem on subbys, he said he replaces these all the time). I trust this guy a lot more than the Steven's Creek shucksters. On an interesting side note, his wife was a national triathlon champ last year.

Anyhow, there's still a chance that he'll find a bunch of other shit that needs to be fixed, but at least I feel like it is in good hands.

Get yer mind out of the gutter.

Hell, that was a '93 ford Ranger, the best year of them all. The tranny was never the same afterwards.

Good to hear they can fix your problems.
