My Day at the Tour of CA Prologue
« on: February 14, 2009, 09:37:57 PM »
The kids opted out, so it was just the wife and I.  We loaded up and got out there about Noon so were set up shop in a good spot.  Walked around and checked out the expo and booths.  Lots of cool stuff, though I was bummed I didn't find the place giving away cow bells!

We went by the Versus both and saw Craig, Phil, and Paul broadcasting.  Brenda waved at them and they waved back.  She got a great shot.

Picked up an Official Guide:

After that we walked back to our spot and settled in for the show.  The weather was a wee bit chilly and windy, but overall it was bearable.  Saw every rider come thorough on the out and back section in front of the Capital.  My wife got lots of great shots but these are the ones of the big dogs:

Thor Hushovd

Tom Boonen

Tyler Hamilton (or his twin? :)

Dave Z.  Head dead almost the whole time we saw him.

Christian Vandevelde looked good.

Lance came storming through.  The crowd absolutely was thunderous and we were a long way from the start.  It was like a wave of noise when he went by and the mass of people switching from one side of the middle divider to the other was pretty cool looking.

Unfortunately the closer up pics of Floyd didn't turn out, but here is what she got:

Finally it was Levi's turn:

Walked over to this finish and who did I happen to see walking down the street (pic w/wife):

Those who got tested:

11- Fabian
2- Lance
47- Jurgen Van De Walle
135- Luis Romero Amarn

On the way to testing we walked by Highroad and Hincapie:

Fabian coming out of testing

We waited for almost an hour for Lance to finish testing.  Here is what I was rewarded with:

I'll let you decide if it was worth it.  It was for me :)

Awesome, and thanks for the pics and the post.  Yeah it was worth it.

Mudworm and I rode the San Jose part of the Warm up.  We road the KOM hill climb and watched the end of the Mens Crit.

It was cold and windy.

Mudworm got 2nd in the Womens Cat4/5/Open.

It's totally worth it!!!

Wish I could have been there, but decided Sac was a bit too far of a drive. Plus, we were committed to do KOM. So, I really appreciate you sharing the great photos. Thank you!
Inch by inch, I will get there.

Dang that's cool..to see Bob Roll. Who cares about the riders. It's Bob!

Eric, do you have your costume ready??? Jump then on Tunitas. I like the devil outfit or the Spiderman or au-natural w/ a a loin cloth. Your choice.
Just think you can be on VERSUS!

I'd be right there with you (w/ video), but I'm in a far, far away land (Tokoyo right now and Taipie in 4 more hours).

Next year fer sure.
I'm not worthy.

Day 2:  Stage 1

Before I left the house, it was pouring.  And when I say pouring, I mean Cats and Dogs pouring.  The hills were socked in with clouds and fog and the drizzle was only broken up by periods of torrential pace.  Due to the weather, I was flying solo for today's stage.  That was fine.  I would rather be solo and happy, then with the family and them miserable :)

On the way to Davis from Vacaville the wind was extreme.  I had both hands on the wheel ever ready for the strong gusts.  I could only imagine what it was like out there in the flats.

Due to the downtown start, I elected to park near the freeway on ramp and hoof it into town.

Welcome to Davis!

I think it turned out as well, as on the way back, there was a line of cars waiting at every light.  I quickly found 3rd and C and eye-balled for a spot on the fence.      On the way there saw a pretty cool "Monster Bike".

That would be cool if this guy was racing!

I detected a gap between two obvious couples, and set to work, slowly inching my way towards the fence.  It is kind of shady, but oh well!  I eventually got to the fence after about 30 mins of "slow moving".  I am sure both couple were thinking, "Where the hell did this guy come from!".  I was finally able to start getting some shots!  Not only was it wet, it was cold, AND it was windy as mentioned.  The hour I waited for the start seemed like eternity, but the commentator was funny and I had brought an umbrella.  I wasn't the only one though, some huge crowds that drew similar comments from everyone including the pro cyclists who they interviewed on stage.

Big crowds!

Eventually the riders came out for Sign In.  Below are some of the bigger names:

Floyd:

Tyler:

Thor:

Boonen:

Z-man:

Tour de France Winner:

Andy Schleck:

Oscar:

Lance being interviewed (sorry for fuzz):

I was standing there taking shots with my huge ass umbrella to keep my camera for getting wet when a Bissel rider came up and asked if he could share until the start to stay dry.  I said sure!

Omer Kem:

They did eventually rollout:

You should recognize some of these guys:

And just like that they were gone:

My plan was to try and beat them to the 128 and thus make it before the roads closed up to Cardiac.  It is amazing that even driving 75-80 mph won't get you there in time.  By the time I got to Winters, 1 rider was through, and before I could get set up then 2 chasers flew by.  I was able to get a shot of the Peloton cruising through.

And then turning the sharp left on Highway (128) towards Cardiac:

I decided instead of trying for an intermediate stop to head straight to Santa Rosa to make sure I was there in time for the finish.  I think this was a good move as I was able to walk the booths, buy some loot, and even pick up some cowbells :)  As with Davis, huge crowd was already there:

A shot of the Finish Line before the start of the madness:

The commentator kept us up to speed on the happenings on the course.  Each announcement was lead by cheers, and they always seemed to play to the Levi "home boy" perspective.  Eventually we heard of the 3 man synching then the chase group with Levi and most other GC contenders starting to give chase.  What was announced next though shocked me, 1st to the line ended the GC clock.  This meant that there was no way for Levi's group to catch Mancebo and pretty much decided the winner right there. They did say that the Stage Winner would be decided on the 3 crit laps.

Here's the winning shot!

But the other chasers were close:

I thought for sure he would be caught, and he was by 2 chasers, but we never got the "pass" announcement.  Floyd got caught in kind of no mans land.  Here is a shot and the look on his face tells it all:

True to his word, Lance tried to be Super Domestique and bring Levi back into the game for the stage win.  Didn't happen, but was cool to see Lance at the helm and taking control:

And when push came to shove, Mancebo had the guns to out sprint the others for not just the GC win, but the stage win as well (Sorry for blur, I had the camera raised over my head as far as I could just to get a shot):

Unreal to have lead for that long as part of a break, crack the other 2, pick up 2 more chasers, then crack them and sprint to the win, the whole time keeping the peleton at bay.  Pretty impressive!

Rightfully Rewarded!

It was a long ride back home and I was pretty beat after the day.  But today made me realize that next year, I will for sure take the week of the ToC off and travel along with it.  I had an amazing time the last 2 days.  I would go for tomorrows stage, but I think the Mrs has had a enough of my Tour Groupy status for the last few days.  I just need to start working on a Press Pass for 2010.

Wow, this is better than any official media report I've ever read. When do you ever read that a reporter needed to spend half an hour working his way into a "gap" between two couples.  ;D

Roughster, you don't do anything half-heartedly, do you? Nice job working from the start to the finish. We are not as tough. Waking up to a pouring rain this morning, we decided to just walk down to the street (Hwy 84) to watch the riders go through town. It would have been nice to watch them climb Tunitas, but it did not look like the rain would light up, although it actually just did.

Okay the breakaway should have topped out (of Tunitas) now. We are walking out to Hwy 84 soon with cowbells and cameras. I want to watch the riders and admire the bikes, but I also want to take photos. They'll go by in a blur because the stretch is straight through town.

All we got was a blur, but it was fun. We were watching the live feed online before and after we got out. OMG, one commentator had NOOOOO idea about the area. He kept saying things that did not make sense. For example, he was still saying the riders were in the City of Woodside even long after they turned south on Hwy 1 from Hwy 84. He once said that today's race would finish in Santa Rosa. I bet he still had a hangover from last night's partying.

Many people were out along side Hwy 84 in La Honda. The rain had stopped when we got out. There was some festival atmosphere hanging in the air. The 10-rider breakaway came by shortly after we got ourselves situated. I was bummed to find that my camera's battery was almost dead. (I swear last night when I turned it on, it showed full.) I only got one video when the breakaway flew by. When the peloton came by, I thought since I would not be fumbling with my camera, I could really focus on finding the big names. Was I wrong! I did not spot Lance in the pack. Many of them still had the rain jackets on. One rider had his riding glove(s) in his mouth. Weird. Maybe he was hoping they would dry up faster that way.

Oh, the rain just started again. Wow, the weather goddess gave La Honda people a nice window.

For what it's worth, here is the video along with a few pics.

Walking towards Hwy 84.
La Honda folks are out on the road.
Apple Jacks. La Honda's symbol.
The ten-rider breadaway.
The front of the peloton. Who are they???
See that rider holding his glove(s) in his mouth?
more of the peloton
more of the peloton
more of the peloton
they look cold.

All the photos are in our gallery.

To cool.  Roughster, awesome post.

Mudworm thank you for the work.  Whoo hoo.  I had fun watching on the computer and a whole 3 minutes live (there was a gap between the riders).

Levi took the lead, Lance is not very far back.  The announcer was clueless.  Up until the Levi was with 1 km of the finish he kept saying Santa Rosa.  Finally after his partner said "Here we are in Santa Cruz" he got the clue.  When the Peloton was riding up Bonney Doon he announced they were going up Tunitus.

Would really like to watch them on Sierra tomorrow but I have a meeting, hmmm.

Joan and I were about 3 miles up Bonny Doon road this afternoon when the race came through. Fun stuff!

I didn't bring my camera, so no pics... But I'll make up for that tomorrow and Friday!

We were basically at the top of the steep part of the road, before it levels out going into the town of Bonny Doon. If you were watching the race on TV, we were across the street from the leader being chased by 'the devil'. It was pouring on us as they went by! Fortunately, we survived the trip down Empire Grade back into Santa Cruz. So a nice 30+ mile ride as well...  :)

F4, I sincerely apologize for my ignorance. I had no idea who Bob Roll was, so I thought you were high or something. That was until Lance's twitter led me to this blog and then I googled up on the name. Hmmm... it seems that I need a TV in order to revert the process of me becoming a social retard. (Maybe it's too late.) I know, I should have read Roughster's caption (below) more carefully -- I thought that was not how Roughster looked, but the picture was "w/ wife", so ...  :blush2:

Love the Bob Roll shot, thanks for the great TRs Roughster.  Hopefully the rain will let up for them today But now in Lodi just north of Stockton it has been a full on Downpour for 2+ hours. I feel a cold coming on so I may have to recover by watching Wenesday's Stage. Hopefully for the riders the weather report is correct and they will have a good day.  Don't expect a great Roughtster style TR  but I will be trying out a new camera.  We will watch the start and a couple of KOMs
Cheers Jeff.

Good times following the Tour today! I rode from home up Sierra Road and then down to the Calaveras 'Wall'. The rain came in when I got to the top of Sierra, so I continued to find a more sheltered spot to stand. Cold, but well worth my while!

I can't see the photos because I don't have a Facebook account. And I'm not getting one. Just wanted to see how long I can resist.  Wonder what their speed was on Sierra Road.
